The death of SEO has been proclaimed (and forecast) for years. I have never bought into this and time has proven that belief correct. I do, however, believe the SEO landscaped has changed significantly causing the elimination of SEO-only providers within the next few years… if not sooner.

The reality is that while SEO will always remain an integral part online marketing, those that focus exclusively on achieving top search engine rankings will fail. Not only will they fail to deliver any kind of valuable service to their clients, but the bottom line is that without incorporating marketing aspects into an SEO campaign, achieving top placement for competitive keywords will become increasingly difficult if not impossible.

Over the last year, Google has released a plethora of free user tools and products. If you look closely at these products, most are really nothing more than information retrieval devices for Google to use to gather data about user behavior on the web as well as on particular websites. This information can then be used to build algorithms that take site popularity and conversions into account when determining ranking results.

The best of these tools released by is Google Analytics, which is a powerful traffic analysis tool for webmasters, which also provides a considerable amount of data about your website to Google. With Analytics installed, Google can see how users use and navigate to your site, and even how well your site converts visitors into customers.

I have previously defined SEO as being only about achieving top rankings. This is a narrow interpretation, but I used this to point out that many so-called SEO companies are still providing SEO as a stand-alone service without any thought to other more marketing oriented services such as usability, conversions, etc. These marketing issues are now, more than ever, necessary for any “optimization” campaign to succeed. Those seeking optimization services that fail to understand this will ultimately choose a firm that will be ineffective in meeting their needs.

Many SEO companies already integrate usability into their optimization services. While these companies may still operate under the “SEO” banner, their services truly are not SEO-only services. Any proposal received for optimization services should spell out the marketing aspects as well as the optimization aspects. Those that don’t often rely on useless guarantees as a means to sell you their service.

It’s far too soon to put “SEO” to rest, but it’s not too soon to ensure that your SEO campaign properly integrates the marketing elements it needs to succeed.

For people to be able to reach your site when they are searching for content or keywords depends totally on the ranking of your site in the search engines. Higher the ranking your site can have in the search engines, higher is the rate of success of your website.

High rankings on the search engines is very important because recent surveys have shown that 80% and above of new visitors to any site, reach there because of search engine query. Hence we can deduce that for visitors to reach your site, you need to have high search engine ranking. Given below are a few steps to improve your ranking on search engines and optimizing the placement of your site:

1. Design for Specific Search Engines -While designing your website, aim to get a high ranking in the top three search engines- Yahoo, Google and MSN. So knowing the criteria on which these search engines rank site is very important. Given below are the current tips to get good placements for your sites on the three big search engines:

2. You should know your target audience. You should know the kind of keywords that your target audience will use for searching content that is available on your website. This can be found out by doing some basic research on the internet. The keywords may not be your site name, but some way related to the site and the content offered therein. Audience will have some questions, whose solution they will be looking for. As a site owner you will need to know the questions whose answers your target audience will be looking for.

3. Meta tags should be used. Meta tags are commands you can place in the html code on your web page. It is on the basis of the Meta tags in your HTML code, that the search engines categorize your website into different categories. Two important Meta tags are:

i. Keywords Meta tags

ii. Description Meta tags
The keyword meta tag includes the keywords from the page and the description meta tag should give a description of what is there on the page. The words used here have to be direct, to the point and without fluff. If the search engine does not find the keywords in the Meta keyword line, then some search engines may not list the site.

To get a better exposure and placement on the search engine, make sure you have a different Meta description tag on every page and remember that the keywords given in the keyword tags have been used in the page content

4. The Title tag should be made optimum: HTML title tag on your website has a lot of importance and is given high weightage by the search engines. Title meta tag is the first element to be scanned by the search engines, therefore the presence of a title is a must. The title should be catchy, should have the keywords that your target audience will be searching for.

To get a better placement the title tag should match the headline text and different pages of the site should have a different title tags, because pages that have the same title tag will be ignored by the search engine.

5. Page Headlines should have Keywords. Page headlines are important for the search engines as well as for the visitors. Page headlines should contain short and crisp keywords and phrases and avoid generic words and fluff. To get a better ranking use strong page headlines and repeat the same headline in the title tag as well.

6. Text should be keyword rich and interesting. To rank websites and pages the search engines actually count all the words on a webpage, and then rank these words by frequency of use on a particular page. More a word or phrase has been used on a page, higher it will rank on the search engine, so if you are aware of the keywords that your audience will be using to search for content on your page, then use those keywords more frequently on the web pages. For a better search engine ranking pack your content with keywords, avoid fluff and meaningless words and phrases that may get you penalty from search engine administration.

7. Images should have ALT Tags. Even images on your site should have a tag, as the Search engines are also indexing sites by the images found on the site. The ALT tags on the images are catalogued by the search engines. So while putting the ALT tag also describe the image by using a keyword or phrase.

8. Links should have Title tag. The links on your site should also have a title tag, because the search engines also look at the links description with a short keyword or a phrase. Most sites still have not got down to using a link title tag, so it would be a good idea to quickly get the links on your website title tagged to gain the advantage over others.

9. Provide a Link Trail. The front page or the home page of your site should provide a maximum of two level trail to the other pages of the website, because the search engines follow the links on the front page that lead into your site. If a link trail is not there on your site, the search engine may not go beyond the first page of your site. It is also important to note that the same meta tag on all your pages may cause the search engine to ignore all the pages beyond the first one. For better search engine ranking the link trail should be so arranged that you are never more than two clicks away from any page.

10. Avoid the Penalty Box. Search engines penalize sites that do not follow the rules laid down by them by not indexing or ranking the sites. They want website owners to keep in mind the following points:
a. Avoid Keyword spoofing - entails using keywords that are not related to content of the site
b. Avoid Keyword spamming - pasting copies of the keywords hundreds of times on the page just to get high ranking by repeated use of keyword.
c. Avoid using Numerous doorway pages - This entails using hundreds of index pages that just point to the site to increase the traffic to the site
d. Avoid Link Spamming - submitting links to the millions of link submission services
e. Avoid Page Redirects -Entails making pages that will redirect the visitor to your website. It can cause loss of ranking
f. Avoid Frames on Main Page - Sites that make use of frames while construction is viewed by search engines adversely. It is not a major penalty, but causes loss of ranking
g. Avoid Flash Movie on Main Page - It is not a heavy penalty, but causes loss of ranking For better page ranking, focus on titles, headlines, text, links, and images on the page, because search engines are intelligent software and can determine what the website content is all about. Avoid using practices that can lead your website to penalty box.

11. Check for errors. The website should be checked for spellings and html checker before submitting it to search engines for indexing, because too many errors can levy a penalty. For better search engine ranking make sure that you have run the spell checker and html checker on your pages, because if once penalized, the search engine will take time may be even six months to revisit your site. Also once your site has been ranked, then you need to maintain the content so that the search engines continue to give you high ranking.

12. Submit the site manually. Submit your site manually to the top search engines, because at times the automatic programs do not work and many search engines can penalize you for using automatic submission programs.

Making your sites compatible to the various search engines will pay off because search engine rankings is what is going to direct the traffic to your site.

Their is simple way of making your website rank top and search optimized.

Step 1. Before buying the domain name think what your business/website services. Try to get the same meaning URL. …or if you already have a website try to make your website starting page content matches the URL.

Step 2. Define your website content in 6 to 10 words and make that as Title

Step 3. Make your heading start with short heading and match the content.

Step 4. The first heading what you place is very important, many search engines even google-bot grab the first body text as the description. You should start this heading with explaining your website or list your services on the top as menu etc.,

Step 5. a. Do not place too many keywords of one or b. do not place too many diffrent keywords. In a. case it will narrow your search optimization to only one set of keyword family In B case it will confuse the search engine while categorizing

Step 6. Place your keywords in the Meta-Tags which are used to detail your website. Write keywords 30 to 60 which are related to your website, and what user should type to see the services Write the Description related to the starting para of website, URL, couple of keywords and services but not more than 100 words.

Step 7. Place each link with a short hint what it is. This will also be your keyword indirectly

Step 8. Place comment tags inside the script in such a way you can edit in futur and this will help now.

Step 9. Make the title Attribute even though these does not influence any search optimization but helps in keywords in content

Step 10. Keywords in text links. When you are keyword is a text link then it sounds very close that the keywords is a website contect for you.

Step 11. Links from various websites back to you. You should be carefull where your links are listed. do no place links where you are not related to that website. Anylink you place write your keyword and href link and a alt tag to help the link connect your website

Step 12. Maintine the common theme throught site will help easy categorization and optimization. If you have diffrent categories in your website then you should better do this in sub domains or diffrent directories and follow the same steps for each directory or subdomain you make

Step 13. Link backs(write articles, comments etc and place your links in same contect websites),Link Exchange write other webmaster an email of link exchange Idea, Maximum Links (do not place more than 60 links in a page), site map (configure you website error 404 page to site map. In case any broken links in the site will bring back to the site map. Site map helps visitors and search engines to follow your website easily.

Write the Robots.txt in to your root directory and copy the user agents of which search engines you are more consern about.

Goto the top search engines, type the top keywords of your website & see which websites are shown and follow the content they made(some times you will see the unrelated results come on top. Then its easy you getting first their.

Ground work is more important than buying adv, link exchanges etc. If your website is not the way bots want then how much money you spend is just going to be in the waterfall.

My research on many diffrent websites included major search engines like google, yahoo, aol, alltheweb etc.

From their news review I found that each search engine carries their own rules and its hard to provide results for everyone. So follow the standards not monopolies

The Google PR ranking system allows others to see a websites worth. Measured from 1 to 10 with 10 the highest rank. We should show our visitors that we are genuine members of the internet community - by showing your website visitors your Page Rank. Remember that a page rank as low as 1 still means that Google are content that your website is complying with their ethics. Read more below.

Google Page Rank is the very best measure at present of a websites importance. However this does not mean that a PR 1, 2 or 3 website is a bad place to buy or gather information from. In fact any Page Rank at all given by Google is alone a good indication that the company or individual you are about to deal with is playing by the Google rules. Google have a very fair policy in which they work out a Page Rank. They use a mathematical formula which allows them to find the importance of your website. The main factor will be the amount of quality backlinks that your wesite is getting. Another main factor is the keyword density within your webpage. There are no tricks to get to the top of the search engines however. You can do it with work, getting those backlinks, checking your keyword density - not too high, not too low. Keyword density should be around 1.5-3% for your top keywords.

If you can get websites linking to yours, where they have a higher Page Rank than you, this helps a lot. Add your website to directories or give something away free, allowing others to link back to you!

Website submission to search engines is a good idea to get your webpages seen, but there are rules here. For a start there are only three real search engines. We have Google, MSN and Yahoo. Most if not all other ’search engines’ use on of the main three as there database. So ultimatly submitting to the others is a waste of time. The other point to remember is that the search engines robots will find you if others are linking back to you. This is the prefered way for a search robot to find you, it means that you are already important enough in others eyes therefore you are important in Googles eyes too. So don’t even bother to add your url to search engines, be patient and they will come to you. This will only be the case of course if you have good relevent backlinks already. This is probably the only time you will have to pay out money, for the backlinks in high ranking page rank web direcories. Web directories are a great way to create backlinks to your site. There are many a directory that will list your website for free and some require you to link back to them also. Some internet directories will ask for a charge for instant additions or on a letting agreement.

Whether or not you choose to pay for web directory backlinks or not is up to you, be aware of the pages Page Rank that you are being added to because if this not a higher Page Rank than your website, the whole backlink idea is pointless. The trick is getting higher ranking websites to link back to you, preferably without you having to link back as two way linking will not score your rank as highly as one way linking. To rank high in search engines takes time.

If you are trying to earna living from the web then why not consider Google Adsense which places well targeted adverts on your website. You can sign up below - its free and they you start earning immediatly. Adsense is a great way of earning on the web because as long as you write the content and the content is well targeted your website visitors will be happy to find adverts that are very close to what they are looking for. Its like a shopping market which the website visitor can control by searching for words carefully.

After you have compiled your website and hosted it, your primary concern is that it should be visited by, more and more people. For this, you try various tactics to promote your site. One way of promoting your website is to submit it with various search engines.

At times, you have submitted your website to the search engine, but you find that you are not indexed or in other words, your site is not appearing in the searches. There could be many reasons for it. Let’s look at some of these reasons:

1. Allocate adequate time - After submission, indexing a website is a time consuming process. Some people in hurry to be indexed, ignore this time period and start expecting their site to appear in the search results, much before the time lapses. Actually, this index time ranges from one to eight weeks depending on the search engine. Some sites such as AltaVista also charge extra if you want to get your site indexed faster.

2. Use Paid Domains – If you have hosted your site on a free domain, you may come across problems in indexing your site. This is because nowadays the search engines either don’t index free sites or index only a limited number of free sites. Therefore, it is always better to host your website on a paid domain with a paid service.

3. Select creditable hosting service: It is very important to host your website with a good hosting service. This is because if at any stage the search engine visits your website and finds that it is not functioning then your website will be simply removed from their database. Therefore, make sure your hosting service is a creditable one, which keeps your website up and running most of the time.

4. Frame-based site - Having a frame-based website can also be a roadblock. In a frame-based site, there are different pages in the same page. As a result, it can happen that your text page is indexed but not the menu page. To solve this problem, you should ideally have a non-frame based website. If not then you can try optimising your frame-based website for a better result.

5. Low Ranking in Searches - It is quite possible that you are indexed on a search engine but you are not aware of it. This could be because your site is getting a very low ranking in the search results. Most people expect that their site to come up in the first few listings. As a result, if their site does not do so then they don’t bother to look further and assume that their site is not indexed. Matters are not helped by the fact that most search engines don’t inform you after indexing your website.

To get a good ranking in the search results it is important for you to optimise your website according to the search engine guidelines.

6. In-complete Website – Before submitting your website ensure that your site is complete and there are no missing pages. Otherwise, your website may not get indexed.

7. Avoid complicated pages – Sometimes in an effort to have a very dynamic website web developers use complicated scripts such as JavaScript and VB scripts etc. However, the search engines don’t always handle these dynamic pages well. As a result, your site could suffer and get a low ranking in search engine results. Therefore, it is advisable to limit the use of such scripts on your site.

8. Link pages from home page - Some search engines follow the policy that they don’t show pages which cant be accessed from the home page. To avoid this kind of a problem you can try to limit such pages or submit them separately.

9. Limit page size: Take care that your website pages don’t become so heavy that they take a long time to load. In such a case, the search engine spider will not be able to fully index your content. Generally, it is recommended to keep your web pages around 50 k and with images etc. around 70 k. This criterion has been set particularly in view of the users still using the dial-up connection.

10. Link your site externally - Another guideline which some search engines such as Google follow is that they don’t index sites which don’t have external links with other sites. At times, they even allocate you a time period of around 30 days to get the external links. If you are not successful then your site may get pruned. You can also take the help of a free service to check the popularity of your website links through http://www.linkpopularitycheck.com.

11. Maintain quality: Make sure that you keep a quality control over your website. This is particularly important in cases where you are submitting your website to directory site like Yahoo, Open Directory, Looksmart etc. This is because, at these sites, they have personnel who carefully analyse the submissions, and omit any, which do not have a good quality.

12. Search Engine spider blocks - If your website requires forms, passwords or registration for access then the search engine spiders will not be able to index it. This is also the case with sites having a searchable database. In such a scenario, you can try to submit those web pages on your site which are simple and don’t have these complications.

13. Sharing IP - Nowadays another problem that you can face is that sometimes the website hosting services give the same IP to multiple websites. As a result, if any one of these websites, using the same IP is involved in any illegal dispute then the search engine de-bars the IP itself making all the associated sites suffer. Therefore, make sure that you have an independent IP and are not sharing it with anyone.

14. Submitting within limit: Some search engines have limits for accepting submissions, for a particular domain, per day. Therefore, before submitting check that you are within limit prescribed for your domain or your submission will go waste.

15. Limit non-indexable content: It is important that you submit only the kind of content that the search engines can index. For example, search engines cannot index embedded text, content in media files, Java applets or in XML coding.

16. Submit link pages separately: Search engines don’t take the trouble to fully index your website. They will simply index, one or two links further than the page that you have submitted. Therefore, if you want some particular pages to be indexed it is advisable to submit them separately.

17. Avoid using spam - It is very important to develop your website with full sincerity. Spam, is very seriously looked down upon by the search engines. Make sure that your site is spam free and you don’t use any tactic, which can be considered spam such as, excessive repetition of keywords etc.

18. Avoid redirecting: If your website is redirecting the viewer to another site then at times this can hamper your indexing process. This is because search engines are wary of being tricked by “cloaking" or IP redirection technology. If they find out that this is the case then you can be sure that they will not index your site.

19. Allow for fluctuations in index time: You will not believe it but there have been cases when the search engines, after indexing sites for some time suddenly stop doing so for months on end for no particular reason. They do restart the process after some time but the wait can get quite frustrating for the web developers. You can however, try to find out the real-world situation through http://www.marketposition.com

20. Technical errors: Besides all these, there are also some technical reasons because of which websites don’t get indexed. These may include technical bugs and errors that arise from the sheer magnitude of the submissions and re-submissions that people make.

21. Submit limited pages: Most search engines have some kind of limits for the number of pages that they will index for each site. The quantity varies from engine to engine. However, if your website is very popular then the search engines stretch this limit for you.

Keep all these guidelines in mind while you are submitting your website to any search engine and allocate ample time for the indexation process.

To arrive at the set of keywords that:

Describe business correctly (are relevant) Attract traffic (are popular & are searched for) Have less competition (are relatively un-optimized for )

Steps

Step I: Lets start by saying that the for the keyword finalization of a web site the first step is to device the theme of the web site. The keywords then should be generated which are in sync with the themeing structure of the site. The home pages & the other higher level pages should target more general(main theme)keywords. The deeper pages (embedded in subdirectories or sub domains) should target more specific & qualified keywords.

Once the sites themes & sub-themes are done, lets start by looking for the keywords

StepII:

The finalization of the keywords for any given site can be done in the following way:

Generation of the seed keywords for the site (theme keywords).

Expansion of the seed keywords into key-phrases by adding qualifiers (sub theme keywords)

Generating a larger set of keywords by word play on the key-phrases generated in step II.(sub theme targeting)

Lets take them one by one:

SEED Keywords/Primary keywords:

The seed keywords can be generated by either of the ways mentioned below:

The client provides the terms he feels are relevant to his business.

The SEO firm generates the seed words by understanding the business domain & the business model of the client.

Some outside domain consultant provides them.

Another way of generating seed keywords is to look for the meta tags of the competition web sites.

WARNING: do not place any unnecessary emphasis on these tags. Use them just to generate you seed keywords list.

If one has certain set of keywords then tools like WT & Overture can also be used to arrive at the other relevant seed keywords.

Typically seed keywords are single word. A good number of seed Keywords is between 10-12.

SUB theme Keywords (add Qualifiers)

Now to these seed keywords add qualifiers.

These qualifiers can be anything location/sub-product/color/part no/activity/singular etc.

By utilizing these qualifiers one can expand the list of the seed keywords. Say a good number would be anywhere between 20-30.

Typicaly a sub theme key phrase could be of 2-3 -4 word length.

One recent study suggests that

The typical searcher often uses longer queries. Many contain more than three words. Within three different search engines, keyword distribution data tells a compelling story:

Words in Query LookSmart (%) Ask.com (%) Teoma (%) 1 27.00 12.76 38.04 2 33.00 22.46 29.59 3 23.00 19.34 18.13 4 10.00 11.89 8.00 5 7.00* 7.86 3.51 6 - 6.19 1.39 7 - 5.47 0.63

LookSmart does not report beyond 5 search terms, instead grouping five or more terms into one category.

Approximately 40 percent of queries in LookSmart have three or more words. About 32 percent in Teoma have three or more. Ask Jeeves has an even higher skew, nearly 62 percent, because of its natural language focus. Within FAST, the database that powers Lycos and others, the average is 2.5 terms. That suggests a similar frequency distribution to LookSmart and Teoma.

Hence we can keep the average length of sub theme keywords at around 3.

There are today search engine and internet marketing services, in fact a new industry has materialised to exploit the fear of low search rankings.

This is not a new trend, back when simply resubmitting your website to the engines resulted in keeping your site at the top of the index, there was an accompanying boom in resubmitting "companies", as we know, these were just men in back bedrooms with a host of CGI and Perl submitting scripts and a timetable.

Search Engine optimisation or "SEO", is the latest incarnation of this bedroom profiteering, the important difference is that now the webmaster’s are not just passively involved but are being forced to adopt totally artificial and unsocial practices that ultimately serve only to help damage the Internet!

SEO is supposedly the methodology and processes related to designing search engine "friendly" web content, the basic premise is something like "If I follow all the engines formatting and connectivity criteria, then my website will rank higher then a comparable website that does not".

All other things being equal, this seems quite positive given that the quality of a search engines database (index) directly effects its output; then webmaster’s optimising their content so that search engines can correctly categorise the internet should logically improve the speed and quality of "the crawl".

SEO then, logically, should be good for the search providers, being able to maintain an efficient index, this should use less raw processing power, require less equipment and thus less energy; this must also be good for the users, being able to quickly and intuitively find what they want from a reliable source. Sounds reasonable right?

Well that’s the happy version. The fact is that initially this may be true, you may gain a short term advantage, but once we have all optimised our content for analysis and (in so doing) ignored our users; We will then be back to where we started, and the search providers will just think up some even more ridiculous "laws" by which to "judge" us by, and like sheep we will all do that as well, thus the causal paradox is perpetuated and the users feel abused!

Even this is a vast oversimplification, the true nature of SEO is a lot more complicated; The heart of the problem and the real issue here is related to the search providers task, which is to strip mine the information junk yard otherwise known as the Internet, it may be full of interesting stuff but also plenty of garbage and they need to devise intelligent techniques to mine the interesting stuff!

The current "solution" is literally for the search engines to use their hegemonic standing to bully the webmaster’s into organising their work in ways that have the primary effect of allowing quick "analysis" so they can categorise the website, but this has the secondary effect of requiring content to be designed "for" analysis, which typically translates to highly distributed connectivity, ie the website being effectively divided into "micro sites", which makes the maintenance of links and content more troublesome!

This is not necessarily a bad thing, most of these imposed linking and design methodologies are often positive and beneficial for a lot of subjects. My problem is that this is unilaterally enforced and it is this type of issue that is generating all the money for the SEO boys.

However this will soon be of no consequence. To understand the problem with this type of SEO operation, it is necessary to think about how we can approximate and simulate the human process of mining information and knowledge.

Let us assume we have set our Crawlers to work, automatically indexing pages (at random, looking at previous indexing and guided by user requests); we then format the resulting text: ASCII is usually used and validation follows this, search engines tend to ignore some tags and make use of good ones that help identify the content. At this point we would have reduced the Internet to a corporation, ie the collection of all HTML documents about no particular subject.

We then would set about item normalisation, ie identification of tokens (words), characterisation of tokens (tagging meaning to words), and finally running stemming algorithms to remove suffixes (and/or prefixes) to derive the final database of terms; this can be efficiently and compactly represented in lower term dimensional spaces, (Goggle are still essentially using inverted file structures).

Imagine each document of a corpus as a point ie a term in an N dimensional space, here the literal word matching type search is lost, but we acquire more of a semantic flavour, where closely related information can be grouped in to clusters of documents bearing similarities, however N dimensional vector spaces are of no help to the users.

After applying our algorithms to the corpora, we get a term by document matrix, where terms and documents are represented by vectors, a query can also be represented by a vector. So we have a query and our corpora (represented as vectors, bo!

th having the same dimensions), we can now start matching the query against all the available documents using the cosine angle between these two vectors.

But we now have a new artificial "problem"; we know the general answer to the question "which website’s best match my search terms", this information now exists in our mathematical object, at a high level of abstraction, ie the cosine angles for all terms against the query vector, this is expressed as a vector corresponding to the sought column and therefore the document we are after, all we need do is present this to the user, right, well….

The issue is that a search engine needs to generate a linear index, ie convert the vectors corresponding to the minimum cosine angles into a human readable format, and until such time as someone thinks of a better way to do it, all engines output lists, like your shopping list, it has a start, a middle and an end, therein lies the problem, how to order the list!

The hypothesis seems simple, ordering information that might look chaotic at first, using the fact that closely associated documents tend to be relevant to similar requests. However, the internet (being a scale free network) is so vast that it is not possible to present a chosen feature space that represents the x closest documents to the convergence point in a given cluster from the common Euclidean distance. This is what should then be presented to the user in a more intelligible (semantic) display.

The engines could just present the returns as produced by the matching algorithms after decomposition, because the grouping generated using probabilistic/fuzzy patterns directly from the cluster might belong to more than one class, but the strength (degree of membership) value measured on a scale; using probability on a [0,1] interval, is quite adequate.

The reason decomposition in singular values works for ordering is related to the fact that the occurrence of two terms (say tomato and potato) is very high is reflected in the term-by-document matrix by showing that only x of the n terms are used very frequently.

The idea is that since the term say pepper is used/mentioned very little, then its axis/dimension does not affect much the search space, making it flat and relevant only in the other two dimensions

However the engine’s demonic creators can’t do this because they are still essentially using an inverted file structure, but they still want absolute correctness in their indexes and returned results which means trouble, because this assumes your index is perfect, incapable of being manipulated and that you can somehow order the returns in a meaningful way!

So the returned results can’t generally represent the documents that match semantically, we now need to account for some subjective quantities, that can not be derived directly from the corpora, they attempt to deal with this by a cocktail of criteria that rank the returns in such a way as its more likely that the "better" results are closer to the top of the list.

There are many ways of doing this, the current trend is to use inference about the quality of web sites were possible because such quantities are beyond the direct control of the content creators and the webmaster’s.

PageRank provides a more sophisticated way of citation counting but this is embodied in the consept of link analysis, using a relative value of importance for a page measured based on the average number of citations per referance item.

PageRank is currently one of the main ways to determine who gets into the top of the listings, but soon this will all become irrelevant when the engines stop using inverted file structures, because they can just use the grouping generated using probabilistic/fuzzy patterns resulting from the convergence point in a given cluster from the common Euclidean distance.

When the changeover from inverted file structures occurs, there will be two direct consequences:

  1. The corpora will be capable of vastly more representative and more detailed data then is Currently possible.
  2. The corpora will no longer be indexed as is currently done, they will embody semantic meaning and value, where some subjective quantities can be derived directly from the corpora without the need for cocktails or totally artificial rules.

The effect is that corpora will be more accurate and incapable of manipulation, thus variations of SEO that involve indirect manipulation of the index will become pointless overnight.

It is worth noting that the search providers are becoming increasingly pessimistic about website promotion in all forms, they currently penalise many things that can effect the results such as duplicated content (which can be perfectly legitimate), and satellite sites, ie one webmaster interlinking seemingly separate but highly relevant website’s.

They may well start penalising webmaster’s that promote their website’s through articles they submit for third party distribution, as they do for people that post their sites information to bulletin boards!

Being banned from the top search engines can effectively destroy your business, if not directly through loss of visibility then indirectly in that people tend to judge you on weather your are organised enough to be listed !

The criteria are continually changing, as the amoral SOE boys attempt to pervert the resultes, these "laws" are not always clear and there are no appeals, where we are all subject to the providers up ending a drum then dispensing swift and hard "judgements", that can doom us at any time!

The part that erks the most is that as the indexes converge, (goggle’s index is used directly by 2 of the 3 top engines and 5 others indirectly use it for their rankings) a bann by anyone of these engines is enforced by them all.

Different strategies for search engine optimization have been developed over the last few years. One strategy that always comes back as a response when asking what works, is to build additional back links to a website that needs to be promoted. This advice is old (old in Internet days) but still very valid. Until Google.com finds a different way of calculating the search engine results the back links will still play a big role and no webmaster should ignore them. The assumption still is that if a site has valuable content or services to offer that other webmasters will link to that particular site. The higher the number of links becomes the more value is being allocated to that website by Google. Google pretty much allows the Internet community to decide or better - help deciding what is good and that it should show up high in search results.

Since this fact became public knowledge people are eager to follow these ‘unwritten rules’ of Google’s search index. Link farms, online link directories and other link collection type of sites have been populating the Internet in increased numbers since then. What the value is of these sites needs to be determined. Plain link farms do not carry any real value for the user. All they are really there is to help to increase the number of backlinks to a site and nothing else. There is no value content-wise whatsoever. Link Directories carry a little more value, but overall the usage of link directories is steadily going down. Search engines are stepping up and provide better value and offer more convenience for the user at the same time. Other websites use their value to sell text links. Users buy these links and basically pay for the link and the hope to gain a higher Page Rank from it. This can work up to a certain limit. It becomes problematic if the seller of the text links stretches the limits on how many outgoing links a single page will carry. 5 - 10 links are probably most common. However - sometimes you run into websites and web pages that carry 20-30 of these outgoing links. The value of these kind of links is questionable. There is no technical reason for a page to carry that many outgoing links in 95% of cases. It’s not exactly clear at this point if search engines degrade the value of inbound links coming from those page already. If they don’t - the day that they will put less value on those links is probably very near. So, users buying text links should verify that the pages the link will be placed on do not carry too many outgoing links to keep the value of this link alive.

Before using keywords for your site, it is always better to check for the popularity of these sub theme keywords. Some or all of the tools mentioned in the keywords tools section could be utilized to measure the popularity of these keywords.

Based on the popularity count of these tools we should come up with a descending order listing of our most unused but good key phrase. These are our good target keywords. As the competition increases on the keywords, deeper optimization then just building keyword specific pages will have to be done.

Variations on sub- theme words:

This is the word- play to get into the mind of the user.

Now our set of 25 to 30 keywords will be expanded to include singular-plural word combinations, juxtaposing the same words in a different combination, using synonyms, building on the list of words using Thesaurus & a good dictionary.

The ideal set of keywords/ key phrases is to come up with around 70-100 possible ways of looking for that web site on the search engines (our keyphrases)

Research on these variations of the sub theme keywords for actually combing up with the combinations that are relatively un optimized for yet popular. At the end of this exercise we will have the ranked list of keywords, which we can start optimizing for.

General observations & other nuggets:

When using google to check for the competing pages through the SERP house the keyphrase in quotes. This will do the exact phrase searching for the phrase that we are optimizing for. Now to have a real feel of the actual competition on this phrase use the adword tool.

Typically offline competition for the business & online competition are not equivalent. The client needs to be driven out of this mindset. Online the competition for us depends on the key-phrases that we choose rather then the industry or the competition chosen keywords.

Another useful tip is to watch out for the ranking of the subpages on the SERPS page.

A higher occurenec of a sub- page suggests a lesser competitive key- phrase.

Keep excel sheets handy to work out on your key words

Here is a benchmark: If the site is fairly well optimized, and has a focused theme, then the combined total number of visitors from secondary variations of the main keyword phrase, should be higher than the number of visitors from your main phrase by itself.

Another yardstick can be that 20% of your search traffic reach you through your primary theme words. Another 20% through the sub theme words & their combos & the remaining 60% is fractional. A true pyramid.

Keep the keyword density on your pages in between 5-20% while optimizing. The latest talking optimization based on keywords is that almost none of the things mentioned above might apply as it is. You create text based on the end user perspective & optimize for 5-6 keywords per page. Check your referrer stats & fine tune optimization.

Free Keyword Tools:

The first tool that can be used is Overture.

One trick is to check the keywords on all the Overture tools, US, UK, DE, FR and even JP. You would be surprised at the ideas you can come up with on the other O Tools that do not appear on the US one. Also, the de-pluralizing and match-drive-alphabetization some times does not appear on the other tools. Second tool of course is the word tracker.

Use Google adwords to check on the competition for the chosen phrases using the CPC barometer. Higher the CPC more the competition.

Another tool is at:

Yet another tool is Alta Vista “PRISMA”

One can use Refine search option of Teoma to arrive at more generic/Primary keywords. Another way of doing that could be through the DMOZ subcategory study.

Refining of key words can be done using the Server side data or the referrs log.

It seems everywhere you turn on the internet today someone has started another low-quality general web directory plastered with Google Adsense ads in the hopes of making some easy money from other webmasters who are trying to acquire backlinks and traffic to their site. These directories have several things in common that dooms any possibility of them becoming a success:

  • poorly thought out or copied directory categories
  • default script template installed and not personalized
  • Google Adsense or other affiliate advertising is plastered all over the site
  • site is poorly marketed and will never provide traffic to links in the directory
  • site will accept any link to fill directory categories rather than focusing on quality listings
  • You can see these new directories popping up daily if you are a regular reader of any of the popular SEO forums. It seems that anyone who learns a little about search engine optimization gets the "original" idea to set up a website directory. With a market so saturated with bad content and greedy webmaster’s it’s hard to imagine that anyone is financially successful running a directory, but there are financially successful directories on the internet so it can be done.

To Niche or Not To Niche

There will always be a market for specialized directories who focus on one discrete topic and organize the resources within this topic logically. While search engine’s are the internet user’s first stop when trying to find resources, high quality website directories within any competitive industry can be found on the first page of results for popular searches at any search engine.

If you are going to start a website directory the first thing you need to decide is "what is this directory going to be about?". If you want to start a general web directory of resources you will be in direct competition with internet search engines and several directories that are already well established.

For the average webmaster that wants to start a web directory my suggestion is to pick a topic you are knowledgeable about and interested in and create a niche website directory about this topic. This approach has several advantages over starting a general website directory including:

    • you are knowledgeable about the subject and will know what categories are important to people in that industry
    • traffic to your directory will be targeted and industry specific benefiting the sites with outgoing links in your directory
    • less competition since you are specializing your site making it easier for you to become an industry authority
    • branding yourself is easier if you choose an industry to associate your directory with
    • If your goal is to make money with your directory make sure to consider this last, well after finalizing your directory topic, category choices, site layout and marketing plan.

Your goal should be to gain credibility within your industry first not plasture your site with advertising in the hopes of getting a few site visitors to click on the ads you have placed there.

Too many would be directory owners place affiliate ads ahead of their directory listings and above the directory categories on their main page.

You have to stop and ask yourself, what does this say about your website? Are you more concerned that your site visitors see your paid advertising or your directory listings?

What message does this layout choice send to businesses who may want to list in your directory? It’s a safe bet that no one wants to see Google Adsense results listed above the directory listing that they have paid you for and you should keep that in mind when working on your layout.

      Paid vs Free Directory Type

After selecting the main topic for your directory you should choose the business model that makes the most sense to what your goals are with the directory.

      There are several popular directory business models on the internet including;

      • Paid Only - as the name suggests, you are required to pay to have your site listed in a paid only directory. Generally, sites in a paid directory are of higher quality since the webmaster’s of these sites care enough about their business to spend money on them.
      • Free Only - you will not see this type of directory anymore as pretty much every directory script now comes pre-installed with a payment module.
      • Paid & Free - the most common form of directory model. Free links can be considered one-way or reciprocal since technically a reciprocal link does not cost money. Payment will usually make your listing appear ahead of other listings or with bolder styling to make it stand out over the free links.
      • Reciprocal Only - a common directory type but is getting a bad reputation. Some people view reciprocal only directories as link farms used to artificially drive up link popularity for a directory by forcing a return link prior to inclusion in the directory. While there are legitimate directories that are reciprocal only I would suggest going with one of the 3 previous options so your site does not get confused as a link farm.
      • The choice is yours but I strongly suggest using either the Paid Only or Paid & Free model. If you choose the Paid & Free model, after your directory has been in existence for a while and has gained some reputation you have the option to switch to a Paid Only model so you don’t have to wade through 100’s of low quality submissions a day.

If you want to keep a free option for webmasters you can make the free links "reciprocal only" in combination with your paid options. This will give your directory the added benefit of boosted link popularity from webmaster’s "linking back" to your site which will help you become the authority site in your industry that you should be trying to be.

        Know Your Target Market

The key to running a successful directory is understanding what a website owner is looking for in a listing from your directory. This is especially true if you are running a paid only directory and you want to attract listings.

Most webmasters are looking for one or a combination of the following:

        • One way backlink from an authority website in their industry (increasing their link popularity an important factor in search engine optimization)
        • A fully indexed site that is crawled by SE’s regularly and can get their site spidered and indexed
        • A combination of high Google page rank + a low number of outgoing links on a webpage within the directory that is relevant to their business.
        • An overall boost to their search engine rankings from the increased link popularity a backlink from your directory will bring them (why this could help a website in the search engine rankings is beyond the scope of this article)
        • Targeted traffic from your directory that leads to sales
        • An attractive, easy to find listing on an authority site that is related to their main site topic
        • Something for nothing
        • The key to having someone want to pay to be listed in your directory is to show up repeatedly for keyphrases they are searching for. This means doing keyword research and creating category pages, meta description tags and page titles that are keyword rich and provide you with a good opportunity to rank for the terms webmasters in your industry are searching for.

If you don’t do this keyword research and you set up your categories improperly webmasters will never find you. If they can’t find you they definately won’t be paying you. This is where creating a niche directory can be to your advantage. If you are knowledgeable on the subject you will have a pretty good idea of what categories to set up already and will only need to augment your experience with keyword suggestion tools.

Once your directory starts to get listings the "content" is created by the webmaster’s adding their listings to your directory. That’s the nice advantage of running a web directory: the user’s create the content for you! You only have to create the framework for them to work with and approve their entries.

          Keyword Suggestion Tools:

          • SEO Book Keyword Suggestion - http://tools.seobook.com/general/keyword/ (free, recommended)
          • Overture - http://inventory.overture.com (free)
          • Wordtracker - http://www.wordtracker.com (free trial, then paid)
          • Choosing a Directory Script

There are a number of items to focus on when making a directory script choice (assuming you do not program the script yourself). You will need to decide whether you will want to run a directory consisting of static html pages or pages built dynamically from a database.

If you choose to build your directory using static html pages be prepared to do a lot of work maintaining your directory as each page will need to be manually edited to add and remove listings.

If you choose a pre-made directory script chances are you are buying a database driven directory script. While this introduces additional complexities to creating your directory the powerful features and abilities a database system provides should not be overlooked.

Simple installation readme files are usually included with the directory script with detailed step by step instructions describing how to install the script. Make sure you read the script requirements prior to making a purchase and ensure your web hosting company supports all of the options required by the script.

            Directory Script Requirements (in general):

            • 1 empty mySQL database with username and password (you must set this up yourself using your hosting control panel or phpmyadmin)
            • PHP support on your hosting server
            • MOD rewrite support - this is an absolute must as this changes database scripts from writing ugly URL’s of the form http://yourdomain.com/index.php?cat=1&id=34 into http://yourdomain.com/category/ . This helps both internet user’s and search engine’s distinguish what your webpage is about and creates a much easier URL to remember.
            • fast web hosting - helps with usability and credibility
            • ftp client program installed on your personal computer - used to upload the directory script files to your web host and perform any permission changes required to make the scripts function. If any permission changes are required they will be noted in the installation instructions for the script.
            • Recommended Directory Scripts :

              • WSN Links or WSN Links Basic - http://scripts.webmastersite.net/wsnlinks/ (recommended) - mySQL-PHP driven and highly customizable. WSN links is $58, WSN Links Basic is free and features a stripped down version of the admin panel.
              • Reciprocal Manager - http://www.reciprocalmanager.com -paid only script $147. Unique in that it stores information in a database but allows you to create static html pages from the database entries. Static pages in general load faster making this an attractive script on slow hosts.
              • Site Sift Listings - http://scripts.site-sift.com/ - mySQL-PHP driven that is fairly easy to understand and maintain. Great option for novice webmasters. Script is free with a $50 payment to remove the copyright link.
              • PHP Links Directory - free and easy to use. mySQL-PHP driven.
              • Script Installation Procedure (in general):

                1. Download the script package from the script vendor to your local machine (or directly to your webserver if you have shell access)
                2. Read the installation instructions in full
                3. Create an empty mySQL database on your hosting server. Write down the database name, database username and database password.
                4. Edit the DB configuration file and add the database information from step 3. The installation instructions should indicate which file will need to be edited.
                5. Upload all of the script files to your web host in the httpdocs folder (folder may have a different name depending on your hosting company) using an ftp program. If you are not going to run the directory from the root of your domain you will have to create a new folder on your web host and upload the script files there.
                6. Run the installation script for the directory following the on screen instructions. If you have errors consult the installation guide and /or support forum for the script.
                7. Remove the installation script (so no one can re-install your directory maliciously)
                8. Log in to your admin panel with the admin username and password created during installation.

Please note these steps are general mySQL-PHP directory script installation instructions. Each directory script will have specific installation instructions that fall outside of the scope of what is listed above so be diligent when reading the instructions provided by your script vendor.

                Customizing the Directory Templates

Now that you have your script installed you need to personalize the look and feel of the website template to distinguish yourself from the crowd. Too many webmasters feel that their job is done once the script has been installed and choose to leave the default template in place unchanged.

Adding a professional design to your directory helps give the impression that you are working diligently on your directory and will also help you gain credibility with webmasters who may be candidates for inclusion.

If you download and install a free script, don’t customize it and have the copyright link at the bottom of every directory page do you look like you care about your business?

If you can’t spend $50 to remove a copyright and another $50-$100 customizing the look and feel of your business then I’m afraid you are going to have a lot of trouble getting people to pay you for a listing in your directory.

Most directory pages are built using php includes which is a fancy way of saying "build the webpage from these pieces". In general, each page in the directory is built using a header file, footer file and body content file.

You can usually find these files stored within a folder called /templates or access them through your directory admin control panel. Since each script handles building of webpages differently, describing the procedure to edit the template files falls outside the scope of this article. Please consult the documentation included with your script for tips on customizing the look and feel of your site.

                Marketing Your Directory

It goes without saying that webmasters are going to have to be able to find you before you can convince them that they need to be in your directory. Marketing your directory is where you will find out if you have what it takes to be successful.

A great place to start marketing your directory is to acquire backlinks from other directory owners. From an SEO perspective it is best to acquire backlinks with varied anchor text and description but make sure the anchor text "keyword directory", "keyword website directory" or "directory of keyword resources" is used for your most important backlinks.

Offering webmaster’s an incentive to link back to your site is also a great way to boost the visibility of your directory. Typically, this incentive would be better placement or more links in your directory for providing the link back.

Another great way to set yourself apart from the also-rans in the directory business is to add a unique feature to your directory listings template that other directories in your industry don’t offer.

                This has two benefits:

                • you will be able to get other webmasters linking to your site more easily because it offers something original
                • your directory will be more desirable to potential webmaster’s because of the enhanced features. It may be as simple as adding a phone number with your listings or linking to a road map and driving instructions but this facet of directory building should not be overlooked.
                • In the Beginning

The temptation to fill your empty directory pages with links can be great in the beginning. Resist this urge. The listings in your directory are all you have in terms of site credibility.

Do you want your directory to be a valuable resource or a link dump? If you approve every site that applies or every site that links to your directory you will end up with a directory of lousy listings. If you have a directory full of lousy listings no one is going to use your site and acquiring unsolicited backlinks from other webmasters to your site simply won’t happen.

Strive to maintain a relevant, valuable resource in your chosen field and you will have success. How much success and how quickly you achieve that success is directly related to the amount of time and energy you put into the directory as with any business.

                  Web Directory Tips Summary :

                  • Choose a niche subject that you are knowledgeable about as your directory topic
                  • Use keyword suggestion tools in combination with your experience to craft directory categories
                  • Only approve relevant, properly categorized, quality websites
                  • Modify the default directory script template with your own design
                  • Try and figure out features that other directories in your industry do not offer that would appeal to potential submitters
                  • Remove the script copyright from your directory pages (pay to do so if required)
                  • If you are using a DB driven script make sure to get MOD rewrite working so you have SEO friendly URL’s
                  • Make sure to include a Terms of Service, Contact Page and Privacy Policy (if you are running a paid directory make your refund /review policy as clear as possible to the user prior to the payment screen)
