How often do you visit the search engines looking for the information that you seek? Twice a week? Every day?

According to SearchEngineWatch.com, seven of the top search engines process over 300 million searches a day! Additionally, Search Engine Watch documents an item called the GVU Survey Results from the Georgia Institute of Technology which shows that 85% of all web users admit to regularly using search engines to find the web sites they visit.

The truth is, if you are seeking sales at your website, then you should be looking for traffic too. While sales is your true goal, no sales can take place until traffic occurs.

A lot of people scream to the high heavens that search engines do not work. The fact is that search engines do work. It is just that the people who are shouting do not understand how to make search engines work for them.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF SEARCH ENGINES

We will not go into great detail right now about how to make search engines work for you. We will only touch on the differences between the search engines of which there are three types: Pay-Per-Clicks, Directories and Spiders.

Pay-Per-Clicks require that you open cash accounts with them before you will be listed. While there are often ways to get into the PPCSE’s without opening an account, we will not discuss that here.

Directories limit your submissions to page title, link and a short description.

For this discussion, we will be speaking about Spider Search Engines. Spiders are in fact software that visits your site and gathers the data from your website to determine how to tell people about your website.

THE NATURE OF SPIDER SEARCH ENGINES

While some Spiders gather a limited number of words from each website, others gather all of the words listed within your website. This is where we come to our point today.

Spiders gather data from your site to provide a title and description for your readers. Additionally, Spiders gather the words from your website and rank those words to determine which sites to return to their users.

The words they gather from your website are referred to as keywords. Search engine keywords exclude pronouns, prepositions and other very common words. All others provide rich fodder to the Spiders.

To get the best use of Spider search engines, you must feed them what they want — you must feed them lots and lots of keywords. It is important to note that the best use of keywords on your website is using keywords that are relative to your products and services.

CONTENT DELIVERS TRAFFIC AND SALES

In a recent study by Yahoo!, most site visitors are looking for information of some kind when they go to a site. By creating the kind of information for your site in an easygoing article style that your visitors want, you can significantly increase both traffic and user time on your site.

While your site does already contain keywords and keyword phrases in your sales copy, it should be noted that providing free information for your visitors is the ideal way to attract new visitors and to strengthen the positioning of your website in the Spider databases.

WHERE TO FIND CONTENT

When you do not have the time or creativity to provide that information on your own, you could realistically tap into the free-reprint market to attain the content you want and need. To browse what may be available to you in the free-reprint market, you can browse the archives at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Free-Reprint-Articles

Here you will find over 20,000 articles available for your use.

The only drawback of using content created by another for the free-reprint market is that the terms for using these articles is to set up a hyperlink to the website of the author as given in the resource box attached to the article. The resource box serves as a small advertisement for author of the article which must appear with all articles used. This is actually a small price to pay for getting high quality content for you to use on your website without monetary cost attached to them.

If you feel that printing someone else’s resource box is simply too high of a price to pay in order to provide content to your visitors and keywords for the Spider search engines, then you should strike out on your own to develop your own content in this format.

GENERATING TARGETED KEYWORDS AND KEYWORD PHRASES

However you cut it, any article placed on your website will generate 300 to 500 specialized and targeted keywords and keyword phrases to feed the Spider databases. In turn, as time progresses, you will discover more and more people flocking to your website from the Spider search engines.

That is what you want isn’t it? Traffic that can be turned into sales? Of course it is.

The time has come to start developing your website to take advantage of the power of the Spider search engines.

The first question most people have is, “What the heck is a “Google?” It is a play on the word “googol,” which is the mathematical figure 1 followed by 100 zeros. Depending on the level of your love for math, this is either the greatest or lamest name for a search engine. Regardless, the clever kids at Google have turned it into a cultural standard.

    The Beginning

Larry Page and Sergey Brin co-founded Google in January of 1996, then known as BackRub. The boys were in the early twenties and classic computer geeks. Sergey was born in Moscow, alum of the University of Michigan and visiting Stanford. Larry was assigned to be his guide. During this visit, they obviously hit it off or today nobody would give a hoot about linking strategies.

Although two men and the name “BackRub” may raise some questions, the name actually referred to a method for producing search engine rankings. Specifically, the BackRub search engine was designed to analyze the “back links” to a site. Although BackRub developed a following with those in the know, nothing much happened for a few years.

    1998

As with most new businesses, the boys needed some serious cash. The brass at Yahoo was interested, but initially passed. Sun Microsystems, of all companies, provided an answer. Andy Bechtolsheim was one of the founders of Sun and, thus, had the necessary deep pockets. $100,000 later, the new search engine company was on the way to stardom.

    A New Name

As legend has it, BackRub became Google for a rather humorous reason. Apparently, Bechtolsheim accidentally made the $100k check out to “Google, Inc.” You can make your own guess as to which one of the boys said, “Hey, I have an idea for a new name.” In September of 1998, Google opened a small office in Menlo Park, California. The rest, as they say, is history.

Today, Google is based in Mountain View, California. Google prefers email communication, but you can get a live voice by calling (650) 623-4000. If you really want to talk to them, refuse a charge from the company on the credit card you use for Adwords. They will contact you pretty quickly!

The company went public in 2004 [Symbol: GOOG] and has a stock value of around $250 per share. Larry and Sergey are sickeningly wealthy. One can assume that Andy Bechtolsheim is also doing all right.

    The Future

In the last year or so, Google has certainly received its fair share of criticism. PageRank is almost useless in relation to ranking in search results. At the time of this writing, PageRank hasn’t worked for three days, which means a change, shuffle, dance or whatever you want to call it is coming.

On the competition front, things are a bit murky. It seems a week doesn’t go by without a patent lawsuit being filed against the company. MSN and Yahoo have started to raise the level of competition and more will be coming. Google’s reliance on AOL as a traffic source is also a bit troubling given the continual loss of market share by the company that nearly brought Time Warner down. Gmail is dogged by patent issues, not to mention questions about violations of the privacy of users. All and all, things are not as rosy compared to a few years ago, but they can hardly be called bad.

Your guess is as good as mine when it comes to predicting if Google will become just another search engine. Personally, I think it will, but not because of any of the above. Instead, the evolution of the Internet suggests there will be a next “big thing.” Who knows, maybe Google will get a Grub [Grub.org] in its Nutch [Nutch.org].

I admit it, I have a problem. I’m a control freak and I like to do things myself because "I’ll do it right and save money at the same time".

This philosophy has gotten me in trouble more than once. Most recently, I broke my blog. Because I knew enough to know that I didn’t know how to set up a blog, I paid somebody to do it all for me. At the same time, I know enough about web programming to be dangerous and figured that I would take over once it was up and running. Consequently, I really messed things up for a few days.

This was a great lesson to me on why I pay people to do things that I shouldn’t be doing. I don’t paint bedrooms (and my wife is much happier for that), I don’t change my oil (tried and failed) and I don’t mess with plumbing. But like so many other people I still find myself trying to do things myself in order to save a few bucks. In the end, it usually costs more–either in insufficient time management or having to fix what I broke–than it would have if I had simply paid somebody with experience to do it right.

The same standards can and should be applied to online marketing. I run across many people who still like to take care of these things in-house. I certainly understand the motivation for doing so, saving money and all that, but what about the time factor? What about ensuring it’s done correctly. What about keeping up with trends and industry changes?

Doing your search engine optimization and marketing in-house will often times produce poorer quality results and use up more valuable man-hours than simply paying a professional in the first place. Even if you were to hire a full-time SEO to work in-house there are so many levels of experience that are necessary to make any optimization campaign successful. If you rely on only one person to do all that you’ll still be shorting yourself some necessary components that make a campaign successful.

There is a reason that the cliché "you get what you pay for" is so often repeated. Because more times than not, it turns out to be true. So the next time you think you’re going to save money by getting it for "free", weigh the cost vs. benefits for the long-term. Are you certain that the job will be done right? Do you have the knowledge to ensure success? Are you really going to be saving any money, or will you end up losing more than you’re "saving".

These are all valuable questions to consider, and if you do you’ll be better armed to make the right decision for your situation. Afterall, any marketing job done right is an investment to your future success.

Links coming to your site are important to SEO. However not all links are the same.

When you are working on your Outside SEO Linking Strategy, there are several major things to consider.

One way links are more valuable than reciprocal links

A one way link is exactly what it sounds like, A link from one site toward yours with out a link from your site going back to there’s. One of the biggest mistakes people make in their Linking strategy is to go after link exchanges.

    Link Exchanges

In the Google algorithm update of October 2005 Link Exchange Links have been devalued.

What is link exchange you ask? If you put a link from you site to my site and I return the favor with a link from my site to yours.

Think about it, in realistic terms, if I link to you and you link to me, it’s just a basic plus one minus one scenario. What true value is that in real life terms? Google has finally devalued those links. One way links coming to your site with Keyword Rich anchor text is only true beneficial link.

    C-block Links

Links should come from various C-Block sources. Each website has its own unique IP address. The first set of digits of that IP address are considered the C-block address. If all your links are coming from the same source or C-Block Address, they are only counted as one link. You could have 1000 of links but if they are all form the same C-Block Source, guess what. They are only counted as one!.

Use this Free tool below to check your C-block addresses of your links

    C block LINK checker: http://www.webuildpages.com/cclass

So what is the Perfect Link?

The perfect links are a one way links none reciprocal that are keyword Rich in anchor text. Below is the HTML Code for a keyword rich anchor link. Replace your domain name and Keywords in the proper space.

To get on Google’s top pages can be accomplished by following a few simple steps. The following procedure works well for companies working within a local region i.e. Lowell Pizza, or business with unique keyword phrases, i.e. Kraton thermoplastic rubber. The steps below outline a simple method to do content optimization. By following the procedure on your home page, you can achieve a high Google ranking. I will be assuming you have a basic understanding of html code.

To optimize your site you have to determine what keywords you want to use. This is one of the most important steps. Without the proper keyword phrases, your customers will not find you, no matter how well your site is ranked. Think of about five keyword phrases. Next, see if your terms are what people actually type in. An excellent tool for this can be found at www.wordtracker.com. This website uses the results from two Meta crawlers called Dogpile and Metacrawler.

The next step is to design the title tag. Currently Google ranks this as one of the most important factors. Ideally you would like to have all your keyword phrases in the title. I find it more practical to have your top keyword phrase followed by your companies’ name. If it is possible, try putting in words that appear in your other keyword phrases. Make sure you keep the title to about 70 characters. Google will not take in all the words on a long title.

The next step is to optimize the names of your graphic images. Rename the graphic image’s file name to your keyword phrases. Separate each word with a -. Do this only once for each keyword phrase or you risk Google classifying you as a spammer. After you rename the graphic image, put your keyword phrases in the alt tag.

The next step I do is set I do is put in the body text. The more text your body has the better. Currently you should have more then 250 words and less then 1200 words. (1000 being the optimum). Now you must insert your keyword phrases. If your keyword phrase is gramically incorrect, try to put the words for each phrase close together. Google uses proximity in determine how important your webpage is. Your keywords should appear a lot in the beginning. A little in the middle of the document, then more at the end. You should strive for a 3% density ratio, or each keyword to appear one time out of every 33 words.

Besides the title, the header gives a lot of weight in your Google rankings. The HTML

tag gives the greatest pull. Some savvy web programs use CSS files to replace the standard header font with something more pleasing to their site. Use a separate header for each keyword phrase if possible. Currently if you have your keyword phrase in more than three header tags, Google will begin to downgrade your document.

There should be one link on your webpage for each keyword phrase. Each link needs to have the same words appear in it, which appear in your keyword phrase. Sometime this is not possible to do.

To boost up your page rankings even more try making some of your keywords bold faced or italic. I would recommend making each keyword bold or italic once. If you do it to many times, you run the risk of getting classified as a spammer.

I hope you found the above information helpful in getting your site onto Google. I have done this for sites for a chiropractor, a driving school and a furniture refinisher. All have appeared on the first page of Google doing just the above work!

Have you noticed lately how savvy webmasters are using simple, content-rich articles to pull-in more targeted *traffic* to their Web Site audience without spending a dime on promotion or advertising?

It’s a fact: content is KING on the Internet. Heavy traffic Web Sites and BIG Newsletter directories are on the lookout for FRESH, original content in the form of articles, interviews, news and reviews.

People need information desperately. They are eager to read something NEW and interesting that captures their attention. We live in the information age, and information sells, both in print or online.

Believe it or not, writing & publishing articles on the Web IS one of the BEST marketing strategies one can use to create an instant avalanche of ‘FREE’ quality *traffic* to their Web Site.

Here comes the most exciting part … the type of *traffic* that you receive by publishing articles on the Internet converts far better than any other ‘PAID’ tactic you ever heard of (e.g. PPC, Classifieds, FFA links, Banners, Safe Lists, etc.)

    Astonishing, isn’t it?

And that doesn’t take into account the fact that, once your article IS published online, it spreeds like wild-fire, regardless the product, service, or information you promote / *sell* in your resource box - the signature line at the bottom of your article.

But there is just one small catch…

Your article should be informative, well-written, with no poor grammar, typos or errors. More than that, you should follow a set of guidelines before publishing it, otherwise most webmasters and Newsletter list owners won’t accept your content, regardless its quality.

These rules vary from publisher to publisher, so it’s a good idea to study each Web Site or Newsletter publishing guidelines before submitting your article to them.

    Fair enough?

Ok, I must let you in on a ’secret’ now …

Writing & publishing articles online is the ‘BEST’ promotional tactic used by TOP marketing ‘Gurus’. You’d be a fool not to ADD this powerful tactic to your overall marketing arsenal.

What makes this system effective and viral?

Usually, Web Site owners and Newsletter publishers will post your article to their Web Sites / Newsletter (they are really hungry for FRESH content!), the search engines (e.g. Google) will index those pages, and you end up getting traffic for days, weeks, months, sometimes even years - after you previously publish your content (article).

Listen, I’m not kidding around. Writing articles it really helps to …

    - boost your exposure on the Web and get more hits, sign-ups, downloads, trials, orders

    - become an EXPERT in your field and form NEW alliances with better known Joint Venture partners while getting the BEST business offers & opportunities

    - turn visitors into loyal, long-term customers who order from you again and again as well as recommending you to their friends and business partners.

To conclude … if you need tons of NEW visitors to your Web Site for weeks, months, even years… without spending money on advertising, then start writing articles right away.

You have no excuses, start your own *traffic* virus now and receive lasting *traffic*, expert status and more income than you can handle.

It always amazed me how little importance foreign business entrepreneurs in the real estate business in Spain give their web presence. Especially in the real estate market people seam to believe that their web site is nothing but a necessary expenditure and fail to understand a couple of things:

    1. A professional web presence is a substantial part of the overall marketing plan and possibly the single most effective way to generate potential customers.

    2. Marketing on the internet is substantially different then off line advertising.

    3. People judge a companies credibility by the content and design of their web site

    4. Web Sites don’t work without promotion

As a result of underestimating these simple facts, the web site owners tend to look for cheap solutions and what is worse: do not put enough effort and planning into their internet presence. A common believe is: once I paid somebody for a web site, this is it, next task.

Very often it becomes worse then that, instead of outsourcing the design, and promotion to a professional, yet expensive Internet Marketing company, they give the task to ‘somebody they know’ or the famous nephew who allegedly ‘knows this stuff’.

The result is web sites which look outdated, look like online brochures, are stuffed with flashy graphics and are highly annoying for the user. Colours have been chosen without given any thought to the effect certain colours have on the subconscious of the user instead the owners favourites are chosen.

The site features hardly any content but an extensive ‘about us’ section, an enquiry form and a searchable property database – and that’s about it. Some web site owners put a little buyers guide and a page with general information about Spain.

The end result is a web site which features the web site owner’s favourite colours, strokes his ego to death ,did not cost a great deal of money but doesn’t do anything but wasting server space.

Then the question occurs: how to gain rankings in search engines? Hey, easy isn’t it? Stuff your meta tags with all the words you want to be found under and submit as often as you can to every search engine on the planet. There are people who even charge for this rather counter productive method.

Then the web site owner waits and waits some more, month go by with little success and he starts wondering what for he made a web site in the first place. Some actually start educating themselves on the internet about the subject – they find an’ idea’ such as ‘link exchange’ and rapidly start contacting other site owners to swap links.

You have guessed it already? Yes, they avoid linking to site’s which feature related content fearing competition and end up having every known Spam site on their link page: Bali Hotels, Russian Hotels, Gambling sites, US Real Estate Directories and so on. None of which is of any value to their users hence considered irrelevant by search engines.

Time goes by, and the site owner and his ‘designer’ remain the only people looking at the site. Finally the site owner decides, as a last resort to contract an SEO consultant.

Now it is really getting funny:

Instead of taking the SEO firms advice on board the game repeats itself: He wants an even nicer, even flashier site and insists that on his colours and design. The SEO firm does it’s best to redesign the site in compliance with internet marketing standards and as search engine friendly as possible.

The SEO firm insist on content and content development, being the single most important aspect of a credible and successful web site, whilst the site owner’s only concern is the ‘look and feel’ of his site, and does not feel the urge to actually think about developing the content of his site – he wants the SEO firm to achieve the impossible mission:

Get MY site in the top ten of Google – and don’t change it.

They recognize the need for traffic (OK, off to a good start). They did their research and selected a company (nice, moving forward) and they plunk down the money (and if it’s an SEO company that’s any good, it wasn’t just pennies either). So far it all sounds good. What happens next – nothing absolutely nothing!

Most companies in Spain that choose to outsource their SEO do not follow the instructions of the SEO firm they hired! I am going to repeat that again so the full impact reaches you – Most companies that choose to outsource their SEO do not follow the instructions of the SEO firm they hired!

Instead they tell the SEO how much expertise they have themselves in marketing, how great they have been designing company literature, and how many years they do marketing. And: what THEY think a good web site needs to look like.

Now here the truth of the matter: There is NOT one SEO consultant on the planet who can get your web site anywhere near to top positions if you are not prepared to change your attitude. SEO is a time consuming, ongoing and difficult task. If it was easy everyone would do it himself. It is not only expensive but requires from you, the site owner the following:

    1. Accepting that online marketing is substantially different from off line marketing.

    2. Accepting that you know little or nothing about it

    3. Time and effort to develop unique in-demand content

    4. Choosing your SEO firm wisely.

    5. Taking your SEO consultants advise on board.

I can’t tell you how many times people have asked me, "How to do I get my site to come up in the top ten of the search engines so I can get hits and sell my product?"

What they really want to know is, "How can I get people to show up to my website without spending any money on advertising my site!"

People usually don’t like my answer because accomplishing a "top ten ranking" on any search engine always requires careful thought along with a significant amount of work.

Three types of "Search engines" abound on the Internet. They include true search engines, directories, and links pages.

At last count approximately 10,000 sites referred to themselves as search engines, though only about a dozen sites rate your attention since they drive 97% of the Internet’s search traffic.

These sites include Google, Yahoo!, Overture, MSN, AltaVista, AllTheWeb, Lycos, DMOZ, and a few others.

When a visitor logs onto a search engine looking for information, they enter "keywords" about the subject in hopes of obtaining a list of relevant websites.

Each search engine or directory operates with its own rules about judging a site’s relevancy to a keyword search.

They look at text on the web page (body text) as well as words you can’t see which reside in the actual code of the web pages.

This code includes such things as alt tags, title tags, and others.

Depending on the search engine, what you can’t see may represent a far more important part of ranking well than the words appearing on the page.

Search engines look at how many times a keyword shows up in the various parts of your website as well as actual location on the page.

Assuming that an important subject for your pages would appear at the beginning of a page, those web pages starting with the keyword should rank better than those that don’t.

Also, in many cases, the more websites linking to your site will drastically impact your rankings.

Entire books and websites exist to teach eager website owners how to pump up their rankings on all the various search engines, however these promotion tips will serve you well in your quest for the "Top Ten!"

** See what others have done for maximum exposure!

Go to the various search engines and perform a search under which you would like to appear.

Dissect those pages to find the common elements that make them show up.

~ How often and where do the keywords appear on the page?
~ How many words on the page in total?
~ Do they put keywords in their hypertext links?
~ How many other sites link to them and could you easily get a link from those sites too?

** Beware of registration vs. promotion

Plenty of companies will "register" your website with thousands of search engines for about $50-$100.

But simply submitting to the search engines won’t do much for you. Without the proper structure in your website, only sheer luck will cause your site to pop up in the top ten!

Once your site is launched, half your battle is won. What lies ahead is the interesting and challenging part of the game. Learning the basics of HTML, creating pages etc actually gets boring for some and they leave it at that.. But once you are beyond the basics, life gets better. The next step is promoting your website. There are various ways to do it.

Press-Release: There are various websites dedicated to press-releases and announcements. You can submit your site briefings to them. What you have to make sure is, that your press release is not a general, ordinary, uninteresting paragraph. In such a case these websites are most likely not to publish it. It has to have a niche, news-value plus useful and interesting content. Make sure of an informative yet interesting headline. Likewise for body copy. There are various websites dedicated to press-releases and announcements. You can submit your site briefings to them. Link Exchange: Exchaning links with sites of similar/ complementary theme is the single most important and guaranteed technique to attain link popularity and move up in search engines. You must try and link to relevant sites as far as possible. You should also make sure that link pages of your own site are categorized properly and that they do not have more than 25 links on one page.

Writing Articles: Write articles related to your main theme and post them to articles’ directories. There are many websites exclusively dedicated to articles. You can use articles available on such websites on your website, which may have been written by webmasters like you and me, and can post articles which other people can read or reproduce on their sites. The more people re-print your article on their sites, the better. It gives you the advantage of one way linking. The webmasters who use your articles, will in reciprocation place your sites link at the bottom of article along with your name.

You can also promote your websites by hiring professional companies, who will do all the above and more for you and will charge you a certain amount for it. Some use software, some claim to do it manually. Depending on your budget you hire them. There are many more ways in between to promote your sites further which you learn as you proceed. Be sure about one thing, having a website on the net is pointless unless its reaching your target audience. And for it to reach them or have surfers visiting your site, promoting your site is a must.

If you have already tried to get top rankings in the major search engines then you have experienced some of the search engine optimization techniques such as doorway pages, invisible text, cloaking, etc…

You probably did. I did. Every website owner out there on the Internet did.

And like many of us, you have been deceived by almost of those techniques because you are not in that coveted #1 search result page. I mean the TOP, first search result page of Google! Not yet?

I am not going to discuss again all those SEO techniques here. No. I know you have heard enough of them.

However, I will try to share my own experience with you!

Every search engine optimization technique has got its proper downside. And they all share the same big downside when they are implemented on any website. I mean a website like yours, a website like mine.

"All SEO Techniques Under-estimate the Most-valued Space of Your Webpage and Do Not Optimize it!"

What is the Most-Valued Space in Your Website?

    Glad you asked!

It is the very top of your page. It is the first 150 words of your HTML code next to the BODY tag. This part of your HTML code is highly analyzed by search engines spiders in order to index your web page.

So every targeted keyword which is placed there has a tremendous "weight" like nowhere else on the rest of your website. Now let me return the question to you…

What is Located in YOUR Most-Valued Space?

If you have a well-shaped business website then you may tell me: "I put my sharp Header graphic right there including a powerful headline!"

My response would be: …And that is exactly the problem!

I know you are very proud of your Header graphic. Perhaps you have shelled out some precious money to get it designed. And of course, this header graphic has certainly boosted your sales by increasing the prospect-to-customer conversion rate of your website!

This is a fact. Header Graphics are powerful items into a sales copy - Indeed!

Unfortunately, search engines spiders do not care about them. And it get even worse: You are restraining the potential of your website by using those graphics. Even if you include a single ALT tag.

    Let me explain…

You definitely know that the very top of your web page should contain your targeted keywords in order to get indexed high by search engines. You also know that these spiders are only interested by text - not graphics. Even if you have designed stunning pictures for your webpage!

So what happen when you just put a very large graphic at the same place where spiders are expecting to find keyword-rich text?

They will just get frustrated and go on scrolling down the rest of your web page. And the more your keywords are far from the top the less they have "weight", density and relevance. And this is bad news if you want to be indexed for those specific keywords :(

So what am I going to do?

Should I wipe my Header Graphic off the top of my page so keywords can take place? And see my sales dropping down… Sure not!

Should I keep the "mute" Header graphic to please my visitors and deceive the search engines spiders? So my web page ends at nowhere in the rankings …Sure not!

    In other words…

You Have to Please All of Visitors AND Search Engines Spiders …at the Same Time!
