First of all you need to get a blog. If you don’t have one yet, you can get one for free by going to www.blogger.com

If you want to see a blog in action you can check out my blog at http://marketing-design.blogspot.com

After you sign up for free, you can choose from a variety of templates and color schemes and start posting immediately. Blogging is essentially an online diary or a kind of forum where you publish your thoughts and allow readers to comment back if they want. Blogs tend to get indexed much faster by the search engines then regular sites especially if you update them a lot (which you should).

Make sure to put a lot of relevant content on the blog and keep keywords in mind just like with your regular website.

Okay so now you have a basic understanding of how a blog works. Once you have your blog up and running add some content and make sure that you links to the website url’s that you want to be put into Yahoo.

• Go to Yahoo and sign up to get a free My Yahoo account.

• Then go to your blog and find the link to your own rss feed. It is under the settings part under ’site feed’. Copy this link to your clipboard.

• Go back to your My Yahoo account, click on the add content link. Next click on the little text link on the right of the box that says ‘add rss by url’.

• On this next page, paste your rss link in the box and click the ‘add’ button and presto your blog will be shown on your My Yahoo page.

Thats all you have to do, the links from your website will be showing up in Yahoo within the next 1-2 days. You can check by going to Yahoo and typing in your url to see if it is listed yet.

It’s that easy.

Happy blogging!

You are an attorney or other service or product provider. You have built an excellent web site, it looks good, it is well optimized and it tells your clients and prospective clients or customers everything they need to know in order to do business with you or purchase your product. You have submitted your site to the major and many minor search engines. Now all you need to do is sit back and wait for clients or customers to come flowing in, right? Wrong.

As the number of websites grow on the internet, it is getting more and more difficult for web sites, even excellent web sites, to obtain good rankings in the search engines. Nowdays it appears that in order to obtain good search engine rankings (somewhere on the first page for your catagory) you must have your meta tags, format and text just right, and then you have to get tons of other web sites to link to you. Even if you do everything right there are still numerous other businesses out there also doing everything right. Therefore, you still might not obtain good rankings. Even if you do obtain good rankings today, the search engines might change there way of ranking sites next week, and your site might well drop or even dissapear from the rankings.

Additionally, it is estimated that nearly 200 million adults use the internet as a source to search for products, services or information, and this number is likely to grow each year. As the number of websites grow on the internet, it is getting increasingly difficult for web surfers to find the product or service that they need. As a result, web surfers are turning to online specialty or niche directories, such as the legal and service directories from Resources For Attorneys.com or the Lifestyle Directories from Resources For Attorneys, to sift through the numerous websites and locate the product, service or information that they need.

Specialty and niche directories normally charge a small fee, $3.00 to $100.00 per year, for your listing. They are usually much smaller and have far fewer listings than the regular search engines. This makes it easier for you to obtain a good listing and it makes it easier for consumers that are actually looking for your service, product or information to find you. Additionally, there is a collateral benefit to listing your site in a directory. Most search engines count directory links as good links and this can sometimes increase your link ranking with those search engines, thereby improving your search engine listings.

Although there is a cost in subitting to these directories the total cost of submitting to several specialty and niche directories is much less than the cost of yellow page, radio or television advertising and the benefits can be as good or sometimes far better.

Finally, many of these directories allow you to submit articles, press releases, news storys and testimonials about your services. This can increase your presence and allow your customers to learn more about you, your service or product.

Many business owners and online marketing experts focus their efforts on search engine optimisation and ensuring high search engine placement for a website. Although search engines should play a crucial part in any online marketing campaign they are but one element to that equation.

Although they are unlikely to send as much traffic to your website as search engines, directories are an essential online resource that need to be considered when developing your online marketing plan.

Directories differ from search engines in a few ways though the most important ones are as follows:

  • Directories usually have some form of human involvement in the editorial process
  • Because of the above there is a quality check in place
  • Because of the above fewer sites will get listed
  • Because of the above the quality of traffic from them will be higher
  • Surfers use directories differently to search engines. With a search engine a user would normally just enter in a phrase and hope for the best. With a directory the user is encouraged to drill down to the relevant area and select the appropriate category from a list.

This means that visitor who comes to your website from a directory is far more likely to convert into a customer as they will already have a greater understanding of the products and services you provide. Whereas those coming from search engines may simply have matched your website to three of four words in a phrase.

Directories are often categorised on a regional basis or by industry sector which means that visitors finding your website via a directory are more likely to be relevant potential customers and therefore will be easier to convert into clients.

So - don’t rule out attracting traffic using directories as part of your online marketing campaign. It is an essential element in the over all online marketing mix.

Directory marketing can help boost your companies performance a great deal. Not only will you get qualified leads for your business, your web site will also increase it’s traffic ranking a tremendous amount.

Here are a couple basic advantages to online directories,

    • Substantial staying power
    • Repetitive marketing
    • Your listing grows with the entire site
    • No updating unless necessary
    • Not necessary to link back to the directory
    • Please Note: This article is meant to discuss and implement marketing strategies for local business directories online, not link exchange, a.k.a swapping links with other websites.

For many people, one/two directories always come to mind,

      • With web marketing, you want to have ever lasting staying power, online directories can provide you with this and more.

Many people who DO NOT use the internet everyday stick with the basics when they come online. Many people are usually looking for a specific service or product that they want to check up on within their local community. This is why it is so crucial that you get noticed locally online.

Every major city has atleast one or two good business directories for you to submit your business to. Many of these directories don’t even require that you have a website.

        =======>

How To Prepare For Directory Submissions

There are certain key bullets of information that 90% of directories ask for, here they are in no particular order.

        Name

        Company
        Position
        Type Of Business
        Phone Number
        Fax Number

Email: - (may need to be validated)

        Web Site

Title Of Your Site: - (keep it within 70 char)
Description: - (keep it within 200 char)

        Search Terms:

If you are asked for search terms, don’t disregard them. This is just there so that the directory you are submitting to can add these search terms to their "search engine" in order to find your business.

So if a directory asks you for search terms, add in as many as you can that you would want people to find your business by.

        and… Category

That’s typically about all that most directories will ask for. Very straight forward. I would recommend opening up "Note Pad" or "Word Document" and fill in these requirements on your own before you start submitting your company. It may save you a lot of time in the end.

        ===========>

        Targeting Regional & International:

If your business is better off targeting people outside your local community, you might want to consider implementing a link exchange program. This is where you will find extremely competitive directories online that want to get as much exposure as you do.

Once you start targeting internationally, many of the directories you will find will most likely want to swap information with you. The good ol’ barter system, an eye for an eye. Nothing wrong with this. Just make sure that the directory you link to doesn’t "feel wrong".

… and I mean "feel wrong".

Someone came to me the other day and asked me to take a look at something. They said that they weren’t sure if they should swap links with this other company. I simply asked them, what kind of feeling do you get from this other company?

This person said that the website was a little fishy and felt a little cold. What’s the best course of action here???

Go with your gut instinct. You never want to link to websites that you don’t even feel right about it. Besides, if you link to it from your site, you might as well put up a banner sign outside your window saying that you fully support this other company.

If an online directory asks you to exchange information and you don’t feel that it would be valuable to your visitors, move onto another directory. If you feel fishy about it, so will others.

        ==========>

        Finding International Directories:

For this you’ll want to implement the same strategy as before when you learned about searching for "local directories". Try using the "country, state/provice" added with online directory or business directory.

So do a search like this:

Canadian Business Directory - or - Online Directories In Canada

This style of searching should bring you specific directories. Please remember that there is NO quick way of doing this. You must have patience since, even now, there are still literally 1000’s of directories I’ve never heard of.

Directories keep popping up every day. Don’t be afraid to search for new directories once a month, or once every 90 days.

        ===========>

Placing Your Companies Directory Listing In The Right Spot:

This step could be one of the most important steps you take for advertising within online directories.

I say this is important because without careful positioning, your directory listing may never see a visitor again.

Steps you can take to get proper placements:

        - Do a "general search":

Search within the directory for something general and related to your business. Place your company within that search result.

        - Only 2 clicks away:

Try placing your company within a category that is only 2 clicks away from the main directory page. This will increase your results. Some directories can’t offer you this, it’s ok depending on the popularity of the directory you are submitting to.

        - Watch out for spammers:

Watch out for directories that list 100 companies on one page. This is called "Link Farms" online and is frowned upon from search engines.

        - Find empty categories:

Don’t be afraid to click in once more in order to find a category that has been barely touched. Getting your own category is the ultimate listing for your business.

        - Don’t go "unrelated":

Do not submit your company to "unrelated" categories. If you can’t find a category for your business, try contacting the directory administrator to implement a new category for your business.

        - Was it too confusing?

Again, go with your gut feeling. If you found the directory way too confusing to find anything, 9/10 times other visitors will also find it confusing and leave.

That about wraps it up for online directories. There is enough knowledge here to help you find the right directories for your business. Some tips have been excluded because every person adapts to their own strategy and I hope you will too.

Yes, it really happens. Now you might find it hard to believe but you will understand after I explain.

Prior to late 2004, Google undisputedly ruled the search engine world. During the second half of the year things took a dramatic turn when Yahoo and MSN decided to challenge the Big G for some of their lucrative market share.

Search engines are a big source of revenue especially when it comes to advertising and for many this is their bread and butter. With the emerging prominence of both Yahoo and MSN, advertisers have more channels through which to advertise their goods and services.

What marks Google apart from it’s two big rivals in this area is the way they display their ads. They deliver their ads through a system called Adwords which is unobtrusive to viewers. The ads are placed to the right to clearly distinguish them from the search results. Occasionally they will place ads above the SERPS.

Overture is the company which handles the placement of ads for both Yahoo and MSN. Now if you should search for a popular keyword in either of them, you will notice that the ads are above the results, to your right and at the bottom of the page just above the Next button. This is where it gets interesting.

Having the privilege of working in a public computer lab, I decided to run some experiments. When customers came in and requested information on various topics I instructed them to use Yahoo or MSN for their search enquiries. The first one looked for “bridal gowns” and another looked for “tourism in Jamaica”. In both cases they click on the first available information which of course is the relevant ads displayed.

I continued my experiment for a week and came to a decisive conclusion. Some search engines are selling our traffic right under our noses! The only time I observed the top ranking websites getting regular click through was when the keywords are not that competitive to involve ad placement.

This leads me to question the quality of traffic one receives from Yahoo and MSN. For every visitor you receive what is the ratio for that which you lose to a sponsored result? And what is the use of optimizing your website for them?

Now mind you, I enjoy a few good rankings on both Yahoo and MSN but they are for keywords that are not that too competitive. For these I enjoy consistent traffic flow but I think that the quality is something to take another look at.

I didn’t write this to bash these guys on how they choose to do their business particularly how they choose to place their ads. My aim is to point out to you that while you may enjoy a top ten result on Yahoo and MSN, chances are you are not getting the amount of visitors you should and could receive.

When you are deciding on the major search engine directories that you want your website to be listed in, you should not overlook one of the most important ones: the DMOZ (short form for Directory Mozilla). DMOZ is just another name for the Open Directory Project, one of the human-powered submission directories. The Open Directory Project (http://www.dmoz.org) was designed and is currently operated by a volunteer group of web editors and reviewers.

It will not cost you a dime to get listed on DMOZ but before you submit your website to the Open Directory Project for review, you will need to be certain it is developed with DMOZ standards in mind. You will need to go through all of your web pages to make sure that your website is elegant and professional.

Your website design should be already completed at the time you make the submission. That means that the design of every single web page should be finished. Unfinished websites will be rejected. Also make sure that your website contains valuable and relevant information or your website will get rejected.

One of the benefits of being listed with the Open Directory Project is that your website will sooner or later appear in other search engines like Google and Yahoo. This happens because the DMOZ listings are used by numerous search engines and directories, including Google.

The submission process is relatively uncomplicated. Your first step is to visit the website of Open Directory Project: http://www.dmoz.org. You will be able to select a category and subcategories for your website and add your website’s URL. Make sure that you selected the correct category and subcategory. Incorrect selection may result in longer waiting period or rejection. Also read and follow the provided instructions and requirements very carefully

The title and description that you submit should be carefully prepared and reviewed to make sure they accurately describe the content and the main theme of your website. If DMOZ editors will disagree with your description or title, they can either change it or completely reject your website.

It may take some time (sometimes 6 months or more …) before your website will show up in the Open Directory Project. However, do not resubmit your website during the waiting period as this can only result in a longer delay or get your website rejected. Be patient and regularly check the status of your submission by doing the search on DMOZ. If your website does not get listed for a long period of time or gets rejected, you can also check on the status of the submission or the reasons for the rejection by contacting the editors for the subcategory that you selected.

(but also one of the most crucial part)

It is time consuming, and… don’t you agree… a tiny bit boring!

Because of that, many webmasters are tempted by the countless offers you find online telling you they will use a software to submit your site to 500 000 directories.

It is tempting because it is cheap, and because it looks like a huge number of backlinks!

Unfortunately, in this huge list of supposedly directories, many sites are in fact link farms with hundreds of poor quality links and often no PageRank, or FFA sites (free-for-all) where everyone can submit but your site does not stay there for a long time. Those two kinds of sites will HURT your ranking in Google, Yahoo and MSN, the 3 major search engines.

There are no major secret behind search engine optimization. You need 2 things : original and optimized content and lots of high quality backlinks.

The importance must be put in “QUALITY” backlinks. This mean links from site with high PageRank and from site with a high link popularity.

To get those quality backlinks, there are not many other options than to do it manually.

The other main advantage of submitting manually to directories is that directories are managed by humans and they will review your site for its quality and for the category you want it to go to. By submitting manually, we insure that your site will be submitted in the proper category. This increase your chances of being listed.

What to look for when you buy manual submission:

        * No monthly submission fees. Why? The answer might be shocking to some of you but : there’s no need to re-submit to directories! Once you have been added, you are there. Re-submitting can only get you accused of spam!

        * No unnecessary fees. Some companies will lure you into their services with a low monthly fee that goes on for a year.

        * Affordable price, but realistic. Submitting to directories manually takes time, an offer that sounds too good to be true might be… not good at all!

        Conclusion
By using a reputable company to do the manual submission of your site, ou will save time! Instead of spending time submitting your site yourself, you can concentrate on building your next site, or growing the current one you have. This should increase your revenues faster.

Yahoo! allows you to set up your own front page called ‘My Yahoo!’. Even if you don’t use Yahoo! as your search engine, you need a My Yahoo! page which you log onto every day. That’s because having a My Yahoo! page that is set up correctly can do wonders for your search engine ranking.

My Yahoo! is a page which you can set up with your own features so that all the material you want is presented to you in a convenient format. You can have news, weather, your diary, your contact list, your share portfolio and a host of other bits and pieces of content. A nice, handy home page for you.

However, a My Yahoo! page can also include something called an RSS Feed. This is a technique called ‘Really Simple Syndication’ and it allows owners of web sites to push their content to viewers, without them having to go collect it by visiting their web site. It can be set up for any page, but is usually reserved for blogs. If you use blogging software or a system such as Blogger you can simply set up an RSS or XML ‘feed’ for your page. (XML - eXtended Markup Language - is another system for syndicating content.) People who want to keep up to date with your news can include your RSS feed in their list of interesting web sites and every time your page is updated, their information is updated as well. Hence you can deliver new information to people who might otherwise forget to revisit your site.

You can include RSS feeds within your My Yahoo! to help you keep up to date with news you want to receive. But there is an added advantage. Yahoo! itself monitors all the My Yahoo! web pages that are created and indexes their content. This means if your own web site’s RSS feed is listed in your My Yahoo! page you get automatic indexing of your web site. If you were to submit your site to Yahoo! you would either have to wait several weeks, or pay a fee to be considered for indexing. With a My Yahoo! page RSS feed, your pages will be indexed within hours.

So, here’s the process you need to follow. Firstly, set up a My Yahoo! page. All you need to do is visit Yahoo! and click on the My Yahoo! logo at the top right of the page.

Then set up your account and choose the kind of layout you want and the features you would like to include. If you are not going to use the My Yahoo! page you create as your main home page, don’t worry too much about this. The main purpose is to get your own web site indexed, so the design of your page is not important.

Now you want to add your RSS/XML feed. Click on the ‘Choose Content’ button at the bottom of your My Yahoo! page. Look at the ‘Wide Modules’ list and you’ll see ‘RSS Headlines (BETA)’ down at the bottom of the list. Don’t worry that it is in ‘beta’ stage - Yahoo! has been using it for well over a year. Select the option and click ‘Finished’. You will then have the option to choose your RSS feeds.

On the ‘Choose your RSS sources’ page simply type in the complete URL (web site address) of your feed. One of mine, for instance, is ‘http://www.infoselling.com/blog/atom.xml’. Your RSS feed will either be an ‘rss’ page or an ‘xml’ page. If you use Blogger and you haven’t set up such a feed, you can do so by visiting the ‘Settings’ page.

Click on the ‘Search’ button and Yahoo! goes off to find your feed. If it finds it successfully you can simply add the selected feed to your page. Click on ‘Finished’ and you’ll be back on your My Yahoo! page. That’s it. Whenever you update your blog your My Yahoo! page gets updated - assuming you log into regularly. You can get your My Yahoo! page updated automatically if you submit your blog at Ping-o-Matic.

One other thing - make sure your RSS feed page includes a ’sitemap’ - a link to a page which includes links to all the pages in your web site. Yahoo! will follow this sitemap link and start looking at all your other pages.

Having a My Yahoo! page is a quick and easy way to get your site indexed within Yahoo!. I tested it with one of my sites. I set up an RSS feed, loaded onto My Yahoo!’s RSS feeds and within three days all 287 pages of the web site had been indexed. With another site, I submitted it to the ‘Submit your site’ option at Yahoo! and several weeks later, still none of those pages have been listed by Yahoo! There is a clear reason to be using RSS feeds and having a My Yahoo! page.
