Submitting your website to the main search engines should be handled with care. Do it right, and the rewards can be great.

Webmaster Beware- Submitting your website to the major search engines too often can get your website banned completely from those all important major search engines, like Google, MSN, Yahoo and Alta Vista.

Let’s face it, everyone wants the coveted top position in their respective category on all the major search engines. Getting there requires a lot of tweaking of your meta tags, reciprocal linking to sites with high page ranks, and of course submitting your site to the search engines, either manually or utilizing a service to do it for you.

Submitting your site manually is a long a tedious operation, often requiring more time than you had planned on spending just to submit to 30 or less search engines. Submitting your site manually is not recommended.

Using a free service to submit your site is the next option you have for getting your site to the internet. The only problem with this method is that you get listed on only a few engines and, you sacrifice your email address to spam gods and become a part of the millions of poor souls who can never get any rest from the nasty spam vermin that will prey on you for the rest of your natural born life. In addition, it becomes very hard to track how often you have submitted your site to the search engines in the first place.

Using a qualified submission service is the most obvious choice here. There are a lot of services out there with offers like “Submit your site to 500,000 search engines and directories for only $39.95”, the real problem with this is there are not even remotely close 500,000 qualified search engines out there, so that means that 99% of your submissions are going to what is know as FFA (Free-for-All) directories. These are NOT where you want to be, besides the fact that you are now in the dreaded worldwide spammers database, your site is listed on directories that get little or no respectable traffic and you have been taken for $39.95. These types of submission services are a dime a dozen on the internet and you should steer clear of any such ridiculous offers or claims.

The reputable companies will give you a clear and concise description of their services. They will break it down for you with information like as follows:

• Which engines they specifically submit to.

• A written guarantee not to share your personal information.

• Make no outrageous claims to submission to hundreds of thousands of engines.

• They will disclose all of they’re contact information so that you may contact them by phone or other means.

• They will provide you with a detailed report via email on your submission results, including who your site was submitted to and the disposition of your submission.

If you want a proper submission for your website, you are going to have to pay for it. There are too many quality submission services to list in this article but we have a good list you can review on our website at BullMarketer.com. Look under the “Weblinks” directory, under search engine submission. We have a high Google page rank, quality traffic, and lots of link back to our site and I can promise you it all started with the use of a quality submission service.

Good luck with your life, love, health, and of course, your website submission.

There is really only one search engine to worry about submitting too and that is Google and you should only submit one page your main once and maybe a sitemap a week later but never more than once a week. If you have a link coming to your new site from a site that is currently listed in Google then Google will find you quicker.

Most importantly search engines that have any bearing will find you if Google has you listed. Not that there are not any other worth while search engines. There are just many that look to Google. If you have a non comercial website you will want to look into DMOZ for a seperate submission.

So don’t pay for directory submission many directories will bring you no traffic at all.

Here is the #1 tip to getting into Google. Get people to link to your site. In particular links form site that are in Google already.

Important Note: The more links that you have going out from your site will effect your page rank with Google negatively. The more links coming in will help your page rank. If you have the highest page rank for a particular key word you win.

Before to answer to this question we have to know what is the difference between a search engine and directory. Here is a brief explanation.

Main difference between search engine and directory lay in the way how websites get entered into their index. People submit their sites to the directories, which are reviewed by human editors. Think of the directories as collections of Internet sites organized by subject. Search engines works by sending out a spider to fetch as many documents as possible. Another program, called an indexer, then reads these documents and creates an index based on the words contained in each document.

Having this said, let’s see why you should not submit your site to the Search Engines.

More than 90% of the search engines traffic comes from three major search engines Google, Yahoo! and MSN.

You can see many ads on Internet which looks like this: “submit your site on X00.000 search engines…”

Submitting your site on hundreds of thousands search engines wouldn’t help and is simply not worth. Save your money as you would do when you see ad’s like: “loose weight while you sleep”.

These three search engines provide results for many other search engines, and if you are listed on these three search engines, your site will be listed on many other search engines too.

Altavista for example show results from the Yahoo! index. Rankings are not the same, because the algorithm is different but index is the same. If your site is new and is listed on Yahoo but not on Altavista, be patient and do nothing. Altavista will show your site when they update their index from yahoo. AOL (America On Line) and Netscape use Google index. They additionally receives and listings from DMOZ. Examples are many.

So called “Meta” search engines like DogPile or Metacrawler are showing results from Google and Yahoo among of others. These search engines actually search the top search engines and show combined results.

If your site is not new, there is a chance that search engines spiders already find your site and index him. So before to do anything check is your site already listed, even if you did not submit your site on any search engine.

But what you should do if your site is just uploaded?

As we already explain search engines are equipped with spiders which will find your site. All you need is to submit your site in Directories, and search engines spiders will find your link and your site will be indexed. But be sure to provide enough “food” for the spiders. That is, submit your site in enough directories, and you will make that process shorter.

While submission to the search engines is wasting of your time, submission to the directories is not. You will benefit from submitting your site in Directories, not only because search engines will find your link there and index your site, but you will also increase your link popularity. Search engines consider each link who is pointing to your site as a one kind of vote and give him a “credit” for each “vote”.

That’s why you should submit your site to as many directories you can. However, don’t expect bulk traffic from the directories. Even the biggest directories like Yahoo! or DMOZ are not able to deliver load of traffics. From the other side, traffic delivered though the directories is usually quality traffic, because these people are browsing to find products or services that you offer.

Submitting your site more than once on search engines might slow down indexing time. If you still want to submit your site on search engines best is do that just once, and do that manually. Companies who advertise that they will submit your site on X00.000 will not do that manually, that is for sure. They use automated submission software, even all major search engines say’s in their submission guidelines that you should submit your site manually. And major search engines are what you should care for only. You remember the fact where the over 90% of traffic comes from?

Remember that only submitting your site to the search engines does nothing to increase your ranking in most cases. If web site optimization on your web site is not properly implemented or is not implemented at all chances are small that your site will be on first few pages with results. And having in mind that only about 7% of the people look further then third page, top is the only place you want to be.

How to calculate if the search engine optimization is worth to invest in? Consider this: What is the annual worth of one customer to you?" Is it 25 €, 250 €, or perhaps 2500 €? How many customers you need to get the invested money back?

Optimization of your website might be one of your best investment ever, if is planed and implemented right.

Contrary to what most people think, it is not necessary to submit your site to the search engines. In the early days of the web, when search engine technology was still primitive and search engines’ ability to crawl the web was somehow limited, it made sense to submit your site.

Today, search engines like Google, MSN or Yahoo! Search have no problem crawling billions of pages and adding them to their index every month (and sometimes even more often). Most likely, they will find your site once they find a link to your page in another website.

That website can be a directory (a site that uses human editors to select, categorize and list websites), a site you exchange links with, or an article-posting site where you submit articles you write, complete with your resource box (a small bio about yourself with a link to your site).

The two best general directories are Yahoo! ($299/year fee) and DMOZ (free, but they may take a while to list your site). Listing your site with them will give you two of the best links you can get.

When exchanging links, make sure you do it with reputable, non-competitive sites with a topic related to yours (for example, if you’re a real estate agent, you may want to trade links with a mortgage broker’s site).

Writing articles and posting them in sites like Article City or Ideamarketers is not only a good way to get links, but also a great way to establish yourself as an expert. The idea is to allow other webmasters to re-print your articles for free, provided that they include your resource box (with a link to your site) at the end of the article.

In summary, don’t waste time, energy and money submitting your site, or using one of those services that claim to submit your site to "thousands of search engines" (they are worthless). Instead, focus on getting high-quality inbound links. They will get your site listed faster while building your site’s online reputation and popularity.

I hear this all the time. "I can get you listed on 100,000 websites for $29.95" and…"I can get you 100,000 hits on your website for the same price". Avoid these like the plague.

First off you don’t need a 100,000 visitors to your site. What you need is 100,000 CUSTOMERS on your site searching for your product or service. Very simply you’re not going to find many people doing this for you. DocMurdock™ will do this. Our mission is to find people looking for your product or service and bring them to your website so that you can sell them. While we don’t guarantee more sales, we’ll get you people who want your product to come and look-see. If your sales message is clear, you’ll sell them. We help with this as well.

How do we do this? We evaluate your site for things that pull people in. Things that are magnets for people and attract them to stay on your site vs. things that repel them and send them to your competition. We also scour the web for those people and lead them to your site so they’ll buy your product or service.

If you have an auto parts site and people show up looking to buy flowers…you’re sales will not increase. If you have flowers and they show up to buy flowers…you’re in the money. This is our objective. More sales for your company. More revenue. This is why we term what we do "Revenue Optimization" not Website Optimization. Kids optimize websites, and there are a lot of kids out there doing it. But…all the hits in the world are not going to increase your revenue, if they’re not from people searching for your product.

With us, your hit counter may actually go down. It’s not a bad thing, it just means that the people who are actually looking for your product or service are finally coming to your site. Another of our objectives is to increase the stay time of visitors. If they’re there for less than a minute…sales will dwindle. If we put things in the right places, give them a call to action, ask them to do something, we keep them there. The longer a potential client is on your site, the more apt they are to purchase something.

Give them a reason to stay there. Offer them something free, ask them to subscribe to a newsletter, buy something, see something, get something for free…there are many ways to keep a customer on your site. Use attractive colors. Go out and see what the hottest websites are using for color schemes. Do those fit your business or your brand? Who are you using for branding and marketing? Check out www.howstudios.com for the best in the business. Howard Lim. Give him a call and tell him I referred you. He’s great, and what he will create for you will help your business convey an image of greatness, one that will sell your product quickly.

100,000 websites…MYTH. There are really only 5 to be concerned with. One of them is listed to the right; GOOGLE the others vary from time to time, but keep in mind MSN, YAHOO, ALEXA, DOGPILE as some primary candidates to submit your site to.

Good luck and may your website rise higher every day.

Now I know many people will say what? That goes against everything most have learned. You start a website then submit to search engines. That is something we need to do and something that is very important but it’s not the most important and not the only thing we need to do.

We do need to submit to the search engines, but you should not pay to submit to hundred’s and thousands of search engines. Think about it, there are only a handful of popular search engines. You’ve never heard of the other thousand engines, so chances are millions of other people have never heard of them either. So why pay $50 or more to a company who claims they will get you top spot in a bunch of search engines that most people won’t use.

You can be the only website listed in that engine and it wouldn’t matter. If no one is there to search on it, then they can’t find you now can they? There are also businesses claiming that they will get you into google, yahoo, msn, and other popular search engines in 24 hours. Those claims are hard because I don’t know the methods or if they are even ethical, but most popular search engines, especially google, can take weeks and months to get into and it’s hard to say whether or not this company is actually telling the truth about letting you in.

There are many ways to get your website out there. After submitting to the top search engines, search for popular directories and submit your website. This can be more time consuming because there are hundreds of directories. Start with yahoo and dmoz directories. They are two of the most popular ones. There are also software in which you can submit to directories semi-automatically. Not fully automatic because most directories need you to fill in information that the softwares usually can’t.

Another tip for getting your website noticed is to get a budget you can live with and advertise with adwords. If you do it right you can be spending less money than if you go with an advertising company. They can cost hundred’s and thousands of dollars.

The most important one, but the hardest is getting sites to link in. Linking in means that other websites have a link to your website. It’s really good because if this site is in high standing with google, yahoo, alexa and has a good page rank, then google will take notice that and your page rank can go up. Doing this is hard because you need to find similar websites that aren’t direct competition and see if they will place a link on their site or trade links, or even sell a little ad space. If you ask 20 websites, then realistically only 1 in that 20 might say yes. So like I said it’s difficult. Also only trade or get linked in with sites that complement yours. If you sell clothes you shouldn’t link to a site that sells car parts. That will only hurt you with the search engines.

Some search engine submissions are free and some pay for this benefit but before I get into it I would like to place a little word of warning.

There will be some places that will offer to submit your website to hundreds or even thousands of search engines for free. Avoid these at all costs! I know I know they are tempting, thoughts stray to “woohoooo now I can do it in one push of the button”.

Problem is this, when you submit your website to these programs they use a script to send out your url and most search engines these days have equipment in place to pick up when these scripts send your url to them. It’s considered spam and once the search engines put your website in their “spam” pile they won’t add your website, possibly never!

The best way is to submit your website to search engines manually yourself. Here are a few websites to get you started that you can submit to for free:

    http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl
    http://www.scrubtheweb.com/addurl.html
    http://www.exactseek.com/add.html
    http://www.splatsearch.com/submit.html

You can also pay someone to manually submit your website to search engines, but don’t expect this to be cheap. If someone is offering to do it for $30 - $50 I would recommend avoiding it, chances are they’re using a script to submit it.

For proper submission and search engine optimization you are generally looking at paying around $600 - $1,000 to get someone to do this for you.

To get listed in yahoo it usually costs around $300 for businesses. Yahoo will list personal sites that aren’t business related for free.

Now that you’ve got a website it’s time to start thinking about promoting it. Search engine listings are the number one way to generate traffic to your website. The following information will help you effectively promote your website through search engines.

    Search Engine Selection
When submitting your site to search engines consider the search engines that will generate the most traffic to your site! There are a core group of search engines that will generate the most traffic to your site. These major search engines below are all excellent choices to have your website listed with:

    • Google
    • Yahoo
    • AllTheWeb.com
    • MSN Search
    • Lycos
    • Ask Jeeves
    • AOL
    • Looksmart
    • Netscape
    • Excite
    • HotBot
    • AltaVista

    Search Engine Rankings
To be effective, your site needs to rank in the top 10 listings, and ideally the top 3. Here are some ways to ensure that your site stays on top.

    Keywords
Choosing the correct keywords for your website is a critical part for obtaining desirable search engine rankings. Your goal is to increase the targeted traffic to your site. For demonstration purposes lets say your website is promoting a computer show in new york. When choosing keywords related to computer show, you have the opportunity to target a general market (such as the keyword “computer show” or a geographical market (such as “computer show in new york”). The keyword “computer show” may attract a wide range of computer show related searches, but the keyword “computer show in new york” is more targeted if you are targeting the state of New York and are looking to attract visitors in New York.

It’s important to know how many times people searched for your keywords and their variations last month in the major search engines. This will help you to choose keywords that people are actually using, as there is no point in choosing a keyword that nobody is searching for.

For example, if one of your keywords is "computer show in new jersey", it’s important to know that “computer show new york” attracts more visitors:

    Searches done in Dec 2005
    Count Search Term
    144 computer show new york
77 computer show in new york
    56 computer fair new york

You can learn from it that "computer show in new york" has been searched only 77 times during the last month in the search engines, yet the keyword "computer show new york" has been used 144 times. That’s 2 times more!

    Meta Tags
Meta tags for your web site are an important part of your search engine submission strategy. The Meta tags should be inserted between the and tags of your document. This is an example format for a web page source, which includes the proper Meta Tags in it.

    Search Engine Optimization
There are other factors to consider when submitting your site to search engines. Meta Tags and Keywords are a great start, but often they won’t help you generate the type of traffic your looking for if your site is in a competitive market competing for the same keywords. When this is the case, you’re next step should be optimizing your web pages. Elements that involve search engine optimization include the location of your keywords through out your meta tags and page content. Also keeping your listing current is important.

Website promotion is a big and ongoing process. Every person who has website should have little knowledge about various elements involved in website promotion even if he had hired a SEO. In this series of articles I had tried to give an overview of all the entities of search engine promotion.

    Title

The title of an HTML page helps users keep track of what they’re viewing as they browse, and it also identifies the page in history and bookmark lists. If you don’t title a page, the page will appear in the browser window, bookmark lists, and history lists as Untitled Document.

Search engines also read as a user and identifies the page from its title. Therefore, keywords in title help in getting good ranking in search engines. Title must not contain more than 80 words. It must be limited to 10-15 words with company name, product name and four words brief.

    Keywords

Many search-engine robots read the contents of the Keywords META tag and use the information to index your pages in their databases. Some search engines put a limit on the number of keywords or characters they will index, and some ignore all keywords if you go beyond the limit. For this reason it’s a good idea to limit your keywords to a few well-chosen words.

It is recommended to limit keywords to 255 characters, all followed by a comma with no space after the comma. Put most important keywords first with different variations like capitalized and lowercase.

    Description

Many search-engine robots read the contents of the Description META tag. Some use the information to index your pages in their databases, and some also display the information below the link to your page in the search results instead of the first few lines of your document. Some search engines put a limit on the number of characters they will index, so it’s a good idea to limit your description to 500-700 characters.

    Heading
Heading tag goes from < H1 > to < H6 >. The font size decreases with the number in the heading tag i.e. < H1 > is larger than < H3 >. Search engines score keywords and text found in heading tags better than other text on the pages. It is very similar as when we read a book we get an idea of the section from its heading.

    Alt Tag
Alt Tag specifies alternative text that appears in place of the image for text-only browsers or for browsers that have been set to download images manually. For visually impaired users who use speech synthesizers with text-only browsers, the text is spoken out loud. This text also appears when the pointer is over the image.

The < ALT > tag can be filled with keywords and some search engines will read and assign points to keywords contained in this tag.

    Page size
Keep the page size as smaller as possible. Make it under 15k.

    Frame
Frames provide a good option to designers to keep certain information visible, while other views are scrolled or replaced. But frame creates problems with search engines, bookmarks, emailing links and so on, because every page corresponds to a single URL. Therefore it is recommended to avoid use of Frames.

    File Name
Try for add keywords in file name. The file name should not be too long. Try to limit file name to 26 characters and total URL to 80-90 characters.

In the next article I will discuss about the various search engine, directories and other techniques of free website promotion.

It is straight forward and simple to submit a web site for free to the search engines and a task that can be done in a few minutes. However, there are plenty of companies offering search engine submission services, these services re-submit your web site to the search engines periodically for a given time period. It amazes me that these services exist and amazes me more why people pay for them.

Google states on its web master pages that re-submitting your web site to the search engine does not make a difference to a sites ranking or to how quickly the site appears in the rankings and from experience this is also true in Yahoo! and MSN.

Why submit your site to the search engines?

Submitting your web site to the search engine will make your web site visible to its robot. A search engine robot is a web spider that runs across the internet, indexing web pages one at a time, following links it finds on other web pages. The submission of your web site to the search engine will inform these robots to index your site. How quickly the robot indexes your web site depends on the search engine, so no guarantees can be made.

Once your web site has been indexed the search engine may rank your site relevant for certain keywords it has picked up on, although these are not taken from your keywords meta data. Again, this is not a guarantee and can take months (especially if it is Google) before your site is visible to search engine users.

How do you know when your web site has been indexed?

The first indication of this can be seen in your web analysis tool, usually under the section marked robots/spider visits. If you do not have such a tool, id recommend installing AW Stats which is free and will accomplish most peoples needs, or you can search through your web sites log files for the IP addresses of the search engine spiders. The main IP addresses to look out for are:

    • Google - will be seen as Googlebot
    • Yahoo - will be seen as Inktomi Slurp
    • MSN - will be seen as MSNBot
    • For a more detailed list take a look at the web robots pages. Once you have identified the robot visit to your web site, it is time to see if your web site has been indexed. To do this you will need to go to the search engine and type in the following command:

      site:www.yoursite.com

Replace www.yoursite.com for the web address of your web site.

If the search engine returns your web site then it means you have been successfully added to its index and can be found by search engine users. However, if your web site does not appear be patient it may take a while.

How to improve the chances of being indexed?

It is possible although not guaranteed to speed up the inclusion of your web site to the search engines by having their spiders find your web site before actually submitting your web site to the engine. This can be done by having a web site that has already been indexed link back to your web site.

This can be done in several ways, some are examples are to have your web site address as part of your signature in a forum, or by having your web design company give you a link as part of their portfolio.

In my experience this has helped considerably, and is always favorable to submitting a web site manually to the search engines. Although, there is nothing wrong with manually submitting your web site!

Is using a submission service bad for my web site?

This does depend on how the company submits your web site to the search engine. Search engines have become good at distinguishing between manual submissions and bulk automated submissions usually made from these types of services (sometimes having different URL’s available), normally when a search engine detects a bulk web site submission it will usually process them slower than manual submissions.

What search engines should I submit to?

Be extremely wary of web sites that say they can submit your web site to 100’s if not 1000’s of search engines. The majority of these search engines will not provide you with any traffic and the web site will likely sell on your email address.

You should submit your web site to the following search engines:

      • Google
      • Yahoo
      • MSN
      • Submitting your web site to these three search engines does not restrict your sites visibility as can be seen by this web site detailing whom powers who where submitting to these 3 actually submits your web site to many more.

Are there any other web sites my site should be submitted to?

In terms of providing your web site with the best possible start in life you should be trying to submit your web site to the following sites:

        • Yahoo! Directory
        • Open directory project
        • Conclusion

Search engine submission is about making your web site visible to the search engine robots. This can be done by manually submitting them to the search engine via their own add site URL or from their robot finding you from another link. Search engine submission services that re-submit your web site are in the end a waste of money.
